This agile, swift and intelligent working dog looks like a rough collie in miniature. It is thought that both breeds share a common ancestor, perhaps the border collie The development of the Sheltie is obscure because the Shetland Islands were isolated from the trend ot travel. It is speculated that there were crossings ot the working collies of Scotland with small breeds such as spaniels and little Iceland dogs. The Shetland Islands, north of Scotland, with their rocks and meager vegetation, produced diminutive, animals appropriate to the environment. The long-haired sheep were small, as were the cattle. The Shetland Pony follows the general tendency of breeding small stock. Hit Shetland Sheep dog has a heavy coat with prptuse mane. It ranges in height from 13 to 16 inches at the shoulders, and has well-feathered legs. These dogs, are valuab e on the farm and as watch dogs. They enjoy great popularity as family companions because they are devoted and known for their obedience. (Lynn Gagne of Leominster, Mass., wins a prize for this question.
