The coaches agreed. When Wilson gave the Hokies the lead with a 42-yard touch- down run on their first pos- session of the second half, No. 16 Virginia Tech had fi- nally found its offensive rhythm and was on its way to a 30-14 victory against sur- prisingly stubborn Boston College.

Linebacker and leading tackler Bruce Taylor left the game in the third quarter with a foot injury, and line- backer Alonzo Tweedy was sidelined with an ankle inju- ry. And that was after defen- sive end Jaymes Gayle, who returned from an ankle injury but tweaked it again early in the first quarter.

The status of Taylor and Tweedy was not known. The injuries made the Ho- defensive performance all the more impressive. The first touchdown drive covered just 35 yards on their i i a a shanked punt, and their last 72 yards in 11 plays came in the fourth quarter with the Hokies leading 27-7. we got inside the 50, we Eagles quarter- back Chase Rettig said. DON PETERSEN AP MIAMI JoJo Nicholas re- covered a fumbled punt for a touchdown and added an in- terception, Lamar Miller ran for 93 yards and a score and banged-up defense was dominant as the Hurri- canes topped No. 20 Georgia Tech 24-7 on Saturday. Mike James also had a touchdown run for Miami (4-3, 2-2 ACC), which won consecutive games for the first time this season and has now beaten Georgia Tech three straight times.

Georgia Tech (6-2, 3-2) came into Saturday averag- ing 517 yards of offense. The Yellow Jackets got only 211 on Saturday, their lowest to- tal since a loss to Iowa in the Orange Bowl after the 2009 season. Since the start of the 2009 season, Georgia Tech has rushed for less than 200 yards only three times all of them at Sun Life Stadium. The Yel- low Jackets got 95 yards on the ground when they visited Miami in 2009, ran for 143 at the end of that season in the Orange Bowl, and then man- aged 134 against the Hurri- canes on Saturday. Jacory Harris threw for 140 yards on only 8-of-23 passing for Miami.

The Hurricanes won easily anyway. Georgia Tech quarterback Tevin Washington threw the ball right to Nicholas on the Yellow first offensive snap of the game, a mistake that set Miami up at the Geor- gia Tech 46. It was doubly costly for the Yellow Jackets, with center Jay Finch going down with what appeared to be a knee injury and eventu- ally getting carted off the sideline for evaluation. The Hurricanes needed 12 plays to score from there, Harris extending the drive with a 13-yard pass to Phillip Dorsett on fourth-and-3 from the 39, and James later cap- ping it with a 2-yard run for a 7-0 Miami lead. In the first half alone, Geor- gia Tech failed on a fake-punt attempt, had an interception to help create one Miami touchdown and then the blown punt return to give the Hurr i canes seven more points.

Nonetheless, with 1:02 left in the half, the Yel- low Jackets were within 14-7. Florida State 41, Maryland 16: EJ Manuel passed for 264 yards and a touchdown, and freshman Devonta Freeman ran for 100 yards a second straight week as Florida State routed Maryland. Jermaine Thomas chipped in with 86 yards and a 35-yard TD run for the Seminoles (4-3, 2-2 ACC.) Dustin Hopkins added a pair of field goals for the winners, but had his consecutive streak stopped at 17 when his first at- tempt narrowly missed. Florida State built its larg- est lead at 41-10 on Debrale 1-yard TD run with 47 seconds left in the game. 41-yard TD with 5:57 left had put the Semi- noles into a 34-10 lead. The Seminoles, who have had a tough time getting a ground game on track all sea- son, finished with 218 rush- ing yards Saturday.

Freeman had 100 yards on the nose on 11 carries while Thomas, who has been working his way into a more prominent role the past couple of weeks, added 86 more yards on 9 car- ries and caught a pass for 25 yards. Florida State climbed over the .500 with its second straight win following three straight losses that endan- gered its ACC title hopes. Coincidentally, it was Flor- ida second consecu- tive win by a 41-16 score, fol- lowing consecutive losses by the identical 35-30 margins.
