A two-point conversion pass by Brian Reader fell in- complete and Virginia es- caped with a 21-20 victory in overtime Saturday. Daniel Micheletti ran in a blocked punt and Reader completed a two- point conversion pass to Mar- sel Posey to tie the game 14-14 in the fourth quarter and force overtime. Virginia (3-2) got the ball first in the extra period and scored on David 27-yard pass to Dominique Terrell. Reader matched that with a 23-yard TD pass to Ar- mauni Johnson. But instead of kicking an extra point to force a second overtime, underdog Idaho (1-4) went for the win and came up short.

Virginia Perry Jones scored two touchdowns, and Idaho got a pair of field goals by Trey Farquhar. ELSEWHERE Miami 45, Bethune-Cook- man 14: Lamar Miller ran for 102 yards and two touch- downs, Tommy Streeter caught two scoring passes and Miami used a series of quick scores to shake off a dreadful early start and beat Bethune-Cookman 45-14 on Saturday. All five of offensive touchdown drives took under 2 minutes two of them checking in at 10 seconds or less. Jacory Harris complet- ed 12 of 17 passes for 175 yards for Miami (2-2). Bethune-Cookman (2-2) took an early 7-0 lead when Jackie Wilson found Eddie Poole with a 1-yard touch- down pass.

The Wildcats kept that edge until midway through the second quarter, when Mi- ami got touchdowns from Streeter and Miller to take the lead for good. Maryland 28, Towson 3: Danny threw two second half touchdowns and defense forced four turnovers, helping the Terrapins pull away to a 28-3 win over in-state foes Towson on Saturday. Maryland (2-2) snapped a two-game losing streak with the win, but failed to convert on any of its third or fourth downs in the first half and led 7-3 at halftime. completed 14 of 21 passes for 123 yards. Davin Meggett added 102 rushing yards, as Maryland finished with 335 yards total offense 198 rushing.

Towson came in leading all Football Championship Series teams in scoring defense, al- lowing an average of 10 points per game, and they held the Maryland offense in check un- til the Tigers began commit- ting turnovers. Kicker Mike Bar- bour booted a 25-yarder to cut the deficit to 28-13. But one-handed touch- down grab from Renner, with about seven minutes left sealed UNC victory. By the time Davis found Danny Webster for a 4-yard touchdown pass with 2:49 re- mianing for the final tally, fans had already started streaming out of the stadium. The feeling felt familiar for the Pirates, who went down a similar path that has marred their season so far.

ECU turned the ball over four times in the first half, and though the Tar Heels convert those mistakes into 28 points, they did enough dam- age to build a comfortable lead. The Pirates never threat- ened the Tar Heels in the 35-20 loss in front of a record crowd at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. To begin the game, the Pi- rates did move the ball.
