PAT CARTER AP outpouring against Virginia last November. this offense is really clicking, hard to ju- nior receiver Conner Vernon said. clicking and not beating ourselves, hard to Last week, the Devils needed Boston College to miss a late field-goal attempt to collect their first win of the season.

This time, though, they left nothing to chance, jumping to a 33-10 lead late in the third quarter. Players relished the mo- ment. just a great feeling being up by as much as we senior receiver Dono- van Varner said. shows us a tough team and that we can compete with anybody. a huge sense of defense held the Green Wave, a member of Con- ference USA, to 318 total yards, including 55 on the ground gradually applying pressure up front.

The Devils yield a touchdown until the fourth quarter. They harassed, hurried and twice sacked quarterback Ryan Griffin, who completed 14 of 29 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown. He never managed to get his team on track or in position to come close to their season average of 33 points per game. Late in the third quarter, sa- fety August Campbell inter- cepted a tipped pass that was delivered off-balance by Grif- fin, who again came under du- ress from the pass rush. And when the Devils held possession, they found ways to score instead of finding ways to keep themselves out of the end zone.

They punted for the first time with 6 minutes, 31 sec- onds remaining. The Devils, who have struggled in the red zone, converted 7-for-7 touch- down opportunities inside their 20-yard line. In what was the longest drive of the season, the Devils capped an 18-play, 75-yard drive with a 2-yard run by red- shirt junior quarterback Sean Renfree. They possessed the ball for 8:12, chewing up clock late in the second quarter with tough runs by sophomore Ju- wan Thompson. Thompson, a bruising run- ner at 5 foot-11 and 215 pounds, rushed 14 times for 69 yards, twice scoring on the ground in the first half.

He busted upfield for a 20-yard touchdown in the first quarter a career long. He became the first Duke back to score two rushing touchdowns in a game since Clifford Harris against James Madison on Aug. 30, 2008. Duke sustained its 18-play, second-quarter drive with gut- sy calls by coach David Cut- cliffe on fourth-and-1 from its 45-yard line and 4. Both times the Devils pounded for the first down.

CHUCK LIDDY chuck.liddy@newsobserver.com DUKE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1C Duke defensive tackle Sydney Sarmiento (82) puts pressure on Tulane running back Orleans Darkwa (26). DURHAM If you thought that August earthquake in Vir- ginia was strange, college version of a tectonic plates collision occurred Sat- urday in Wallace Wade Stadi- um. Duke completely routed an opponent, subjecting Tulane to the sort of misery normally reserved only for the Blue Devils themselves, 48-27. More amazing, it was the straight win of the season for Duke. I a that the Dev- ils win one in a a a a a Florida Inter- national this week to take a 3-2 record into the middle of the season.

With just a touch better luck in a season-opening 23-21 loss to Richmond, the Blue Devils would be 3-1 today rather than 2-2 (1-0 in the ACC). What gives? Not a lot, prob- ably. Tulane (2-2) has an awful defense, even by Conference USA standards. Hidden in the Devilish de- tails of the victory were a cou- ple of injuries to important Duke defenders senior end Kenny Anunike and senior safety Lee Butler. Quarter- back Sean Renfree and stand- out receiver Connor Vernon absorbed a lot of punishment considering the one-sided competition.

When the china stops rat- tling, Duke will still probably be a slight underdog at FIU and then return home for three straight ACC games Florida State, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech that could set the table for a 2-10 or 3-9 final record. But on this wet homecom- ing afternoon before an ac- tive but embarrassingly small crowd Duke finally delivered the kind of hot show that Da- vid Cutcliffe thought would happen more often when he arrived in 2008. With Renfree overcoming an early pick-six to eventually throw for 278 yards, the of- fense was impressive through- out. Vernon (six receptions) was dazzling at times and running back Juwan Thompson aver- aged almost five yards on his 14 carries. The best part of all? not the best we can play, not at Cutcliffe said.

Duke quarterback Sean Renfree has thrown two inter- ceptions this season and now interceptions in back-to-back games. This time, with the Blue Devils at their 23 in the first quar- ter, the redshirt junior telegraphed his throw on a play in the flat to senior tight end Cooper Helfet.

Renfree locked on his intended target and cornerback Ryan Travis jumped the route, nabbed the ball out of the air and raced for a touchdown. Last season, Renfree finished with 17 intercep- tions and struggled with turnovers for a stretch midway through the year.
