For him: a Cana suit and Armani shirt and tie For her: a Mulligan dress in olive patchwork The plush appropriate Photography by Jeffery Washington Star-Telegram ust two years ago on Sept 11 1997 New York retail titan Saks Fifth Avenue took a giant step into the Texas market moving from its smaller store in Houston across the street to the The new store a monstrous 207000-square-foot beauty was now just a mall hall away from Neiman Marcus A week later a second Houston location opened at Town and Country Center Nervy we thought Taking on Neiman Marcus our state's beloved upscale retailer right on its own turf Would it work we wondered? Would Texans relate to the Manhattan-based megastore? Apparently they did We did And now Saks vibrant and aggressive at the age of 75 is at it again The Fifth Avenue legend has had a presence in the Dallas Galleria since 1982 but now it's growing moving into the space vacated by Marshall Field and giving us a major dose of East Coast style right next door to West Coast-based Nordstrom The new 175000-square-foot store which has 50 percent more selling space than the former digs opens to the public at noon tomorrow following tonight's gala preview benefiting The Center for Neuro-Oncology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center So what's new about the new Saks? Ah-nost everything First the superficial: The new store is light airy and simply gorgeous The design created by New York-based Tucci Segrete and Rthen includes limestone columns art deco-inspired railing polished metal textures and commissioned artwork inside a 3-story atrium capped by a silver-leafed rotunda Porcelain tiling on the main floor imitates the deco floor design of New York's Rockefeller Center Next the amenities: Replacing the former location's Saks beauty salon is a 4000-square-foot Elizabeth Arden Red Door Salon and day spa featuring pampering services from facials to body wraps and from manicures to massages The new store also boasts a Frank McIntosh decorative home shop and for the shopping-weary a third-floor male-friendly club room with ultra-comfy leather chairs TVs tuned to sports programs a wet bar and a faux fireplace Last but not least what's new is extensive lines of handbags shoes jewelry cosmetics and of course clothes clothes clothes All reflect the company's new "more modern hipper approach" says the Galeria store's manager Gary Guthrie The new Saks expands the number of designer offerings with a Christian Dior boutique a Jil Sander boutique two Giorgio Artriani boutiques a Vera Wang Bridal boutique and exclusive designs from Valentino Issey Miyake Balmain and Mulligan The slew of new lines for women includes Zoran Badgley Mischka John Galliano Louis Feraud Thierry Mugler Carolina Herrera Richard Tyler Couture and Lela Rose Nervy we say is this New York-based retailer offering us so much in its march across the Lone Star State Will North Texans like Houstonians relate?
