GOLDSBOKO, N. C. Wednesday, January 30, 1889. THE NEW SOUTH. If the attention given to a subject is an evidence of its importance, then there is no greater question before the public to-day than the development of the 'New South." The opinion is universal that the Southern States are entering upon an era of great prosperity.

The evil effects' of the war have now been eradicated, and, with a "new generation" and enlarged means and opportunities for progress everywhere at hand, it is believed that these States will show marvelous growth during the next quarter of a century. The evidence that this thrill of life has begun can Je seen in the following statistics; hastily gathered: Crop values have increased from 62,976,31 1 in 1 880 to upward of $72,000,000 in 1885. The increase of taxable wealth for the same period was 1,300,000. The annual product of pig-iron shows an increase of over 500,000 tons, while the manufacture of cotton goods has doubled since 1880. These items show that in the industries to which they refer there has been constant improvement for ten years past.

This, it is only the small prophecy of what is yet to come. New industries are being planted at available points, old methods are being supplanted by newer and better ones, while the wealth that is increasing adds vastly to the progress of every enterprise. All processes are at first slow, but when once the beginnings are made subsequent advancement is more rapid. It may thus be- in ferred that the most difficult part of the work has already been ac complished, and that those who now invest funds in Southern in dustries will reach an immediate and renumerative reward. This marvelous awakening of the industrial and commercial spirit in the South is not alone due to Northern enterprise or example, but as well to the indomitable pluck of her people, who, by their own labor, have redeemed their land from the dread havoc of war.

Some of the Republican organs have stated that of the United States Senators elected recently, not one is conspicuously wealthy. How much money do they expect a man to have before he becomes conspicuously wealthy? Do they expect him to get possession of that half of this country which Jay Gould thus far has failed to obtain titles to? Two of the recently elected Republican members are millionaires. Are not they conspicuously wealthy? That all-devouring octopus, the Pullman Palace Car Company, has taken into its capacious maw the Union Palace Car Company, which includes the Mann Boudoir and Woodruff companies. The price paid was 2,850,000. Thus mon-oply marches right along in this country without let or hindrance.

If Mr. Manamaker is to be appointed to a Cabinet position because he raised a 600,000 campaign fund, the precedent will be a bad one. Such a formal recognition of the influence of money in politics could not be otherwise than hurtful to public morals. It is estimated that the cotton crop of 1888 will reach 7,500,000 bales, the largest on record. A big cotton crop means flush times in the South.
