The steam all escaping, and there being no brakes, the engineer lost all control of his steed, and it came tearing down the 60-foot grade at a break-neck speed, some saying it went at the rate of fifty miles per hour. It weathered all the dangers safely, however, including the sharp curve above town, and the tunnel, and came thundering through the streets as never a locomotive passed through before. Striking an ascending grade as it neared the bridge, it slackened its pace and came to a stand-still just before it got across the river. Four or five hands and three or four boys were on board, and were congratulated on their miraculous escape by the large crowd which were attracted to the spot.

To the Editor of the Kansas City Times; The excitement over the recent lead discoveries in this county is intense. Never before has this mineral fever developed more rapidly than at present in this county. Not a day passes but we hear of new and rich discoveries, and there yet remains beneath the rich, productive 6oil of Morgan endless bodies of this ore, which will ere long be developed by the untiring hand of industry. There has been three hundred and fifty thousand pounds of lead taken up in this county within the past six or eight days, and thousands upon thousands of pounds in sight, and with this we feel ourselves the richest people in the world; and if we are not, we soon will be, for these mammoth veins of mineral seem to have no terminus. Iron is also found in this county, and our coal fields are withont sides end or bottom.

The coal of the Martin coal banks, one quarter of a mile east of this place, is to be excelled by no other coal in the State. It is well known that this road has been delayed by litigation in Saline county, which has been lately determined adversely to the company the Supreme Court deciding that the company had no legal organization on this side of the river.

The directors, however, are now determined to push the road through to this city; and as they already have the line about completed to Glasgow, and partially boilt through Saline county, the prospects of an early completion of a through and direct line are better in this direction than any other yet suggested. And more than this, the managers of the road have always dealt honestly and fairly with this county; have at all times evinced a disposition of the most exemplary good faith, refusing to accept the bonds of this county until they were fully satisfied of the legality of the subscription and until they would guarantee the completion of their line to thi3 citv. 4 completion of this line will not only give us direct transportation thropgh the coal fields of Lafayette, but also puts us in easy communication with the heart of Saline county, the wealthiest county in the State.
