OPERATION. Milwaukee, Nov. 11. Anton Berg, fourteen years old, on whom an operation was performed in the hope of removing an irresistible impulse to steal, was discharged from the Trinity hospital, this city, today, and returned to his home. He 'said that an aversion had come to him of theft or crime of any nature, and the physicians interested in his case believe that he has been won 'to honesty.

The operation was performed on October 10 last by Dr. W. C. F. Wittc, of Marquette University.

When the boy was five years old a door fell on him and caused a dent in his skull. He lay in danger of death for several weeks, and after his recoveiy developed a tendency to steal. This grew on him each year', and he also became a victim of other evil habits. The Guinea aa a Christmas Bird. Those who have learned to appreciate the exquisite flavor which the delicate flesh of a plump guinea invariably possesses are not slow in expressing surprise at the fact that the excellent qualities of this bird have not been mo widely recognized.

It is true that the cookbooks have little to say about, them. Even some of the so-called standard works on cookery fail to refer to them at all, and yet there can be no question but that the properly cooked guinea fowl is, superior eating to cither the duck or the goose. Dr. Langworthy, who prepared the recent bulletin on "The Guinea Fowl" for the United States department of Agriculture, advises that the birds be cooked with a little onion and bceon in a casserole, or he recommends the following recipe: "Cover the bottom of a skillet with sliced onion slightly browned; lay on it the guinea fowl nicely cut as for a fric assee, putting thin strips of bacon over the meat; add a little water, close tne skillet tightly bv means of paper tier over the top. Cook in the oven until A Paving Investment.

Name Size. OUGHT TO BE GIVEN A CHANCE TO EARN A LIVING "The world owes ant shouts "Weary Willie." But the world repudiates his claim, and the world is right in refusing to pay. -The world does not owe Willie a living, but it does owe him (and every other peTson) a chance to earn a living. This is the fundamental right of man the right to earn a living by labor, says Edwin Mark ham in a symposium, "If I Were a National 8auta in the December Delineator. We say to the hungry man, "Go to work, thou sluggard!" This is sou nil advice; but what if a man has no work and can find none? Thousands of men are living in enforced idleness.

I myself for week tramped tho streets of San Francisco looking for work. We have allowed our lands and otter resources to be monopolized by. a few; we hare allowed the stalwarts to scoop in opportunies that once were free to all. Gone are many of the chances that men once had on tbe free frontiers. Society having destroyed these chances society is bound in jtistiee to provide work for the workless, bread-labor for the hungry.

It is the duty of society yea, the safety of society to see to it that a man has work. And until the state provides this work, penalties for begging and stealing might well be abolished; begging might be looked on as business, and. thieving as commendable thrift. What, then, would be my Christmas gift to the nation It would be a system organized by the state to provide work at living wages for all workless men and women, This should be done by the state, not as a charity, but as a bounden duty, and men should accept it, not aa a favor, but as a primal right. This would be my Christmas gift.

How best could the state make it ready i What would be the ways and means! Ah, this is another story! The lady in question has a beautiful summer residence in Riverdalc avenue, a residential suburb of Yonkers. One day the past summer, expecting a number of York friends to dine with her, she herself went to Yonkers to make preparations for the anticipated dinner. She went to the leading produce market in the city and on entering the store she observed twelve chickens dressed and on the stand outsiide.

Approaching the clerk she said: "You will portion my odd manner of purchasing, but I wish you would pick me out six of the toughest chickens in that lot of twelve. I have a reason in asking." The clerk giave a careful examination and picked six of the toughest ones. Miss Goodwin then said: "Yon are sure there arc no tough ones among the other six!" The clerk replied. "No, Miss Goodwin, they are absolutely tender," whereupon, Miss Goodwin replied, "then you may send those six tender ones to my house at once." Miss Goodwin appears at the Grand November 18.
