If" WJ wwnw III Fort Worth Star-Telegram SECTION C-PAGE ONE TUESDAY MORNING JUNE 6 1972 SPORTS-MARKETS-OIL CROSSWORD-OBITUARIES Realignment of Major Leagues Gaining Acceptance Everyone who talks of realignment takes inter-league play for granted By LEONARD KOPPETT 1971 Ntw York Tlmoi Newt Strvlco Realignment of major leagues advocated by critics and some insiders for years is closer to acceptance because of two recent events: The move of Willie Mays from San Francisco to New York and a Giant-Dodger game that drew 9885 paid admissions in San Francisco last Thursday leadership which has always displayed amazing inertia is often influenced out of proportion by a dramatic or symbolic incident The process behind it may have been going on for a long time but stubbornly ignored but once it displays itself in something that catches attention long-resisted thoughts begin to receive consideration The connection between this habit pattern and the two recent happenings (both involving the Giants only incidentally) runs this way: Realignment means breaking up the existing composition of the four divisions that comprise the two leagues and regrouping the teams in a way to increase attractive pairings It is not automatically tied to inter-league play but everyone who talks of realignment also takes this for granted The resistance to this process has come from those who are unwilling to give up what they consider profitable rivalries For instance when the National League expanded from 10 to 12 teams for the 1969 season to match an expansion already voted by the American the Mets were among those who staunchly opposed breaking the league into two divisions Their avowed reason was tiat they to have only six home games a year with the Giants and six with the Dodgers instead of the nine they had in the old 10-team schedule Eventually there was a compromise: The American League which had already voted to cut its schedule to 156 games (meaning three fewer home games for each team each year) agreed to go back to 162 if the National would accept two divisions Furthermore in deference to the Mets the National League ignored geography and put St Louis and Chicago in the Eastern Division with the Mets But time goes on and things change rapidly as the progressives tried to point out in 1968 Not a single former Brooklyn Dodger is still playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the switch of Mays from the Giants to the Mets eliminated the last nos-Turn to Reshaping on Fage 3 no longer is a protection against low attendance in baseball Rested Rangers
