2. (Special) The cornhuskers and Washburn college, of Topeka. inaugurated the 1020 gridiron campaign today on Nebraska field, the huskers winning an interesting contest, 14 to 0, in the presence of 4,000 spectators. The beefy outweighing the Ichabods by a substantial margin, were outplayed during the opening period. Washburn had two promising chances to score but lacked the offensive punch to take the pigskin across the Nebraska goal.

A cornhusker rally featured the second period- in which the Nebraska eleven ran the ends and drove thru the line a succession of gains which advanced the ball from the middle of 1h field, carried it over the Washburn Quarterback Newman scored the touchdown. A fumbled punt-by Stevens. Washburn quarterback factored in Nebraska's second touchdown. Swanson, Nebraska end, recovered the ball on Washburn's 15 yard line, from which Fullback Dale and Halfback Moore, took it across the Ichabod's goal. Captain Day kicked both goals.

If Bill Hargiss is using ineligible men, the complaint must come from some 'other source than Doctor AVeede. oieir MM liiilllffl ILAMB-EHGIl vo Doctor AVeede did say before the game in question that as chairman, of the Kansas conference eligibility committee he had received protests about men at conference schools, including protests against men in the Emporia school. lie assured Hargiss that if as chairman of that committee he pressed inquiries concerning the standing of the men in question it would be done only because his position demanded that action.

So here's the situation in the conference. The race for students last summer has led to complications. Charges and counter charges are already abroad. AVhat truth is behind them only an investigation will show. Hargiss, as the first one under open fire, denies that any of his men are tainted with professionalism or ineligibility; and if Hargiss remembers the constant assaults on his teams of other days, he will keep himself and his men above suspicion.

In mose cases a chance to earn necessary expenses by working is all that is offered. Scholarships consisting mostly of free tuition are frequently used.

The sum total of the efforts seems to be only a general ami emlrasive increase of athletes, with no fhrgraut violations of the amateur code. When a case is brought up the end is usually the implication of many more minor offenders. The last eligility scandal began Avith a complaint against an Emporia normal player and brought up with mention of players from six other-colleges.
