I E-3 Sunday, Nov. 17, 1985 The Sun Hesperia wins CIF 2A girls cross-country title Prep hi Paul Oberjuerge By VIC WEST Sun Sports Writer WALNUT The Hesperia High School girls cross-country team proved on Saturday that its meteoric rise to a No.l CIF 2A ranking this season was no fluke. Led by the talented sophomore duo of Nicole Houle and Robbyn Bryant, the Scorpions capped a season which saw them emerge as a power in the CIF by capturing the 2A team championship during the Southern Section Finals at Mt. San Antonio College. Houle and Bryant finished in third and fourth place individually as Hesperia placed four runners among the top 22.

What's more, every member of the Scorpions' team improved on their previous-best time over Mt. SAC's hilly, three-mile course as Hesperia posted a team score of 82, 10 points lower than second-place ly, then charged past about a dozen runners; in the final two miles. Among those they passed near the of the race was a tiring Rigney, a sophcn. more who also finished behind Houle and! Bryant at the SAL finals. She was timed; Saturday in 18:53.

"I was exhausted," said Cajon's top run-, ner. "I just couldn't go anymore. I have liked to beat them, but that's the way; it goes." Also in the 2A girls race, Chino took sev-. enth with a score of 171, Apple Valley was ninth at 184 and Yucaipa wound up 12th in 263. Apple Valley sophomore Tonya Irick; was the top individual finisher among those! schools, taking 16th in 20:33.

In the 1A girls competition, Twentynine; Palms scored 108 points to finish behind' Morro Bay (71), Maranatha (79) and Cabrillff' (93). The Wildcats' best individuals were Barbara Robbins (sixth, Kiela Snider (eighth, 20:26) and Keri Cole (18th, Cajon's Jennifer Rigney finished right behind Hesperia's Houle and Bryant to gain one of the five individual medals awarded, and Twentynine Palms posted a fourth-place team finish in the 1A girls race to highlight San Bernardino County performances at the meet. The headline showing, however, came from Hesperia, which captured the first CIF title in the school's short, IVi-year history with a combined team time of 101 minutes, 35 seconds. That was better than the 101:10 mark the Scorpions recorded at the Mt. SAC Invitational three weeks ago, and well ahead of their 104:23 clocking in the CIF Prelims on the same course last week.

"The girls were awesome today," said Hesperia coach Joe Gomez. "I told them that to win, they didn't have to run any faster than they did at the invitational. But every one of them ran faster." Houle and Bryant, the twosome chiefly responsible for the Scorpions going from unranked status at the beginning of the season to No.l in the 2A coaches poll by the end, were timed in 18 minutes, 40 seconds, and 18:41, respectively. They finished behind only Mountain View's Tracey Williams, who easily defended her 2A Individual title in 17:37, and Temple City's Amy Dabul Sophomore Barbara Beydler, who hyper-ventilated near the end of last week's race before falling and failing to finish, was Hesperia's next finisher, taking 13th in 20:16. "She was the big key today," Gomez said of Beydler.

"The score was so close, she had to be the difference." Hesperia's Casey Weigand, a junior, was 22nd in 20:50, and sophomore Kim Harrison rounded out the five scoring Scorpions runners by taking 55th in 22:08. Meanwhile, at the front of the pack, some prerace strategy seemed to pay off for Houle and Bryant, who hung back ear Big Bear tops Serrano, 9-6, on field goal as time expires Wild-card hopefuls waiting Jim Evans is hopeful. Chuck Pettersen is expectant. Both football coaches would love to have their seasons continue later this week in the first round of the CIF playoffs, but both need to be dealt wild-card berths to make it. That's always a tricky proposition.

Pettersen's Cajon team has a good shot of being in the playoffs when the bracketing is released today at the CIF offices in Cerri-tos. The Cowboys finished fourth in the San Andreas League with a 64 record. The wjid-card berth usually goes to the fourth-place team with the best overall record, and Cajon's prime competition will come from Azusa, 5-3-2 while finishing fourth in the Mont view League. Pettersen argues that his team had a tougher pre-league schedule quarter when a center snap sailed over the head of Big Bear punter Jim Voss. Serrano strong safety John Edgerly recovered at the 3.

But with second place in the DAL at stake, Big Bear's defense held, and a penalty pushed Serrano back to the 19. From there, McReynolds came on to boot a 37-yard field goal into a strong wind to tie the game at 6-6 with just 49 seconds to play. Big Bear's last drive saw many fights break out, leading to some ejections. Serrano also picked up two pass interference penalties to move the ball down to Serrano's 5 with just seven seconds remaining. On the next play, Brown was forced to scramble out of the pocket and fire the ball out of bounds with three seconds left to give Underwood a chance to win it.

with a big game; he now has 1,948 and needs 240 more to break the 15-year-old record held by Dave Dykstra of Redlands. With its run-and-shoot passing game bottled up, Big Bear turned to its ground game, in the person of tailback Dan Cowp-er, who picked up 165 yards on 24 carries and scored the game's only touchdown, a 35-yard run with 5:33 left in the first half. Brown's two-point conversion pass fell incomplete and it was 6-0. Serrano got on the scoreboard later in the quarter when linebacker John Peacock intercepted Brown's pass at Big Bear's 33-yard line. Four plays later junior kicker Mark McReynolds hit a 48-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 6-3.

Serrano got another break in the fourth second place, and 6-3-1 overall after winning a high-spirited game before a crowd of 1,000. The Bears' first-round playoffs opponent will be announced today. Serrano finishes its season 1-5 in the DAL and 1-9 overall. In a game that started 1 hour, 20 minutes late (Big Bear's bus broke down) and was played in temperatures around the mid 30s, Big Bear and Serrano combined for 18 penalties for 177 yards to keep both teams from mounting a long drive all day. Serrano largely shut down Big Bear's potent passing attack, limiting Bears quarterback Mark Brown to 53 air yards on 4-of-23.

He was intercepted once. Brown could have set the San Bernardino County single-season passing record By STEVE RACE Special to The Sun PHELAN Tony Underwood kicked a 22-yard field goal with no time left on the clock Saturday afternoon to give Big Bear a hard-earned 9-6 De Anza League victory over Serrano and a berth in the CIF Inland Conference playoffs. "That was our first field goal that we have attempted all year," said an ecstatic Big Bear coach Tom Smailes. "We haven't been on our practice field since last Friday because of the snow. There is still 9-to-12 inches on the field.

"If we get to play a home game in the playoffs we will have to find another place to play," Smailes added. Big Bear finishes 4-1-1 in DAL play, in than Azusa and finished the season faster. But it's up to a CIF committee to decide. Evans' Redlands team is something of a longshot for the Big Five playoffs. Evans argues that Redlands had a better league record (4-3 vs. 2-3) and finished faster than St. Paul.

All he can do is wait on the CIF committee. "It's in the hands of the gods," Evans said. The irony of the wild-card situation is this: Whoever is "lucky" enough to make the playoffs field invariably gets matched up with the top-seeded team in the tournament. In Cajon's case, that would be unbeaten Charter Oak. In Red-lands' case, it would be unbeaten Bishop Amat.

Fontana coach Dick Bruich concedes the Steelers' title-deciding 19-15 loss to Poly was a painful one. Fontana committed seven turnovers. "What hurts is when you play well and get hurt on a few big plays," he said. "It's easier to lose 27-7 and say, 'Let's start getting ready for next The Big Five final was an All-CBL affair a year ago, but no one expects a repeat this fall. Poly is given a chance by most observers to penetrate deep into the playoffs, but Fontana and San the league's other two sure playoffs teams, could be in for tough sledding.

"Poly could be there at the end, but I don't think we have enough speed," said Fohi's Bruich. Redlands' Evans points out Fontana and San G. are both coming off tough losses (the latter 27-0 vs. Redlands). "Those two could be demoralized," Evans said.
