A nerdy Jason Schwartzman left ponders a dance with Olivia Williams while Bill Murray cuts a rug with Sara Tanaka in Rushmore e'-'- 'tet 1:: l' f-e'ke -4 --e 01 le 0 erotere 0--1 3-Arls i 4 A l'''' I rot 9 9 0 'elf1Sd01211R A 0 00 In 'Rushmore: a collagelike coming-of-age comedy no one actually grows up New Line Cinema the folks behind Blast From the Past have given us a present for the present: this nifty Blast From the Past lunch box Being journalists we immediately looked inside for food but instead we found a martini shaker (sorry no ingredients) Hard Candy nail polish two Astro Turf coasters a cassette of the movie's soundtrack (with Perry Como back-to-back with Randy Newman) a videocassette of the movie's trailer and a "Nuclear War Survival Recipe Book" (including such comfort food as deviled eggs meattoaf and of course a Rob Roy martini) The movie opens Feb 12 to the restive spirit he brought to his portrayal of Hunter Thompson in Where the Buffalo Roam In Rushmore Murray finds just the place for his insinuating corrosiveness sporting pinstripe suits and matching shirt-tie ensembles that make him look like he aspires to be either Matt Lauer or Johnny Cochran In this boys-will-be-boys tableau of -I Olympian pettiness Max and Herman are pitted against each other with Max's aggressiveness even impressing Herman It's fitting that Max is an 1 aspiring actor-writer-director because he has a capacity for turning everything in his life into melodrama and his cheesy self- dramatizing arrogance is funny He has to make himself the constant center of attention He's a spoiled brat of his own making and the expectation that Anderson and co-writer Owen Wilson set up is that Max will come to some realization about himself Or that Herman will grow up Neither happens so Rushmore is like an overly vivid cartoon Anderson turns Rushmore into a hand-Continued on the next page he got there He writes grandiloquent plays about big events through a perspective that he must've gleaned from movies subjects such as Frank Serpico or his own version of the Vietnam War dramas complete with onstage special effects like explosions (Though at one point he's carrying a copy of David Halberstam's The Powers That Be) He has thrown himself into every aspect of Rushmore RFShM0 except his studies "He's the worst student we've got" drawls Dr Guggenheim Directo (Brian Cox) the school's SW Nisolq headmaster ictolmet When Max develops a ength crush on one of the teach- Rate 1 ers Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams who seems far more human here than she did in The Postman) his Life goes off track In his attempts to impress he gets himself thrown out of Rushmore And his mentor Herman becomes his rival for Rosemary Murray with his contemplative shrewdness takes over the movie For years he has done startling good work in pictures that have no place for him going all the way back Rushmore 10WCf I 'recto La 'Rummel CMS 411i111 rilliptol f0Aoto By ELVIS MITCHELL STAR-TELEGRAM FILM CRITIC "Take dead aim on the rich boys get them in the cross hairs and take them down" bored out-of-it millionaire Herman Blume (Bill Murray) lectures the benign indifferent students of Rushmore the elite boys' school that's the setting for Wes Anderson's new comedy (The picture had its debut at last season's inaugural Fort Worth Film Festival) One of the students Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) takes particular notice of Blume's speech Max the protagonist of Rushmore is a nervy ambitious nerd who sports his Rushmore blazer as if he spends his entire Life in it He recognizes a kindred spirit in Herman and Max attaches himself to him Max has shoehorned himself into every after-school club and extracurricular activity that Rushmore has and he has created a few activities that Rushmore didn't have before Movies: Elvis Mitchell (817) 390-7614 Robert Phi tpot (817) 390-7872 robpstar-telegramcom Todd Camp (817) 390-7691 tcompstar-telegramcom movie key: a must-see highly recommended good but flawed not recommended a must-avoid Ned not recommended must avoid wwwstar-tetegramcomjustgo STAR-TELEGRAM February 5-11 1999 STAR TIME 5.
