for three days was reduced to one The Florida Marlins' sale situation remained unclear although some owners in Seattle said they expected it to go through eventually The owners announced Monday that they wouldn't vote on the Marlins' deal in Seattle "I would assume it's on track" Montreal Expos president Claude Brochu said "I don't think there's any problem" It may be on track and there might not be a problem but there are a lot of people in South Florida who are wondering whether the $169 million sale of the Marlins from Wayne Huizenga to team president Don Smiley is going to happen Smiley declined to comment on the Marlins' situation When the owners sat down to meet yesterday they decided that one day was enough time to act on the Rangers' sale Hicks wasn't in Seattle but the owners had no problems with that or with him "Everything that I've heard about him is that he's outstanding" Colorado Rockies owner Jerry McMorris said "This is a case where some very outstanding people are being replaced by another outstanding person "It's been the most noncontro- versial quiet process that we've had" Said Anaheim Angels president Tony Tavares: "You would struggle to find a more quality guy to get involved in the game Look at the man and look at his background He's been successful at everything he's done" Tavares' Angels are chasing the Rangers in the AL West "I think he should move to the American League East" Tavares said jokingly of the new Rangers owner "I don't think it would get much support but I think I'll propose it anyway" McMorris said he expects the Marlins' sale to be approved in the future "Don Smiley's had a very good reputation with this group" he said "I hope that he's successful in trying to put together the right ownership group And I hope he's successful in his desires to keep the team in Miami" The purchase price of the Rangers is the second-highest in baseball behind the $311 million Rupert Murdoch paid for the Los Angeles Dodgers from Peter O'Malley in May Hicks controls two companies Chancellor Media of Dallas and Capstar Broadcasting of Austin His combined radio revenue is $15 billion The next owners' meeting is scheduled1 for Sept 15-17 in stretch "I think any good team expects to do well against a team that might be struggling or isn't playing as well as it should" said Helling who gave up two runs on five hits and five walks "You want to take advantage of those situations" Helling though lost command of the strike zone in the seventh inning Jason Bates opened the inning with a single and Helling issued consecutive one-out walks to pinch hitter John Vander Wal and center fielder Curtis Goodwin to load the bases Rangers manager Johnny Oates summoned right-hander Xavier Hernandez from the bullpen after the walk to Goodwin Rockies manager Don Baylor countered by sending catcher Jeff Reed a left-handed hitter to pinch hit for struggling second baseman Mike Lansing Hernandez retired Reed on strikes with three pitches but he too would struggle with command Helton drew a bases-loaded walk tor the Rockies' second run which brought third baseman Vinny Castilla to the plate Castilla who entered the game with 22 home runs represented the potential go-ahead run and worked the count full but Hernandez struck him out on a slider The Rangers took advantage of the Rockies' mistakes in the fourth inning Right-hander John Thomson (5-6) fell behind in the count to Gonzalez who deposited a second-pitch fastball into the left-field seats to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead Thomson then issued a walk to Clark who advanced to third on the ensuing single by catcher Ivan Rodriguez Right fielder Dante Bichette allowed Rodriguez to advance to second when his throw sailed high above the cutoff man Clark scored on the sacrifice fly by Cedeno and Tatis drove in Rodriguez with a one-out single to right field to give the Rangers a 4-1 lead The Rangers chased Thomson during their next at-bat with their third consecutive three-hit inning Clark's one-out run-scoring single gave Helling a four-run lead with which to work The Rangers wasted three hits in the third inning after consecutive singles by Helling and center fielder Tom Goodwin The Rockies who trailed 1-0 after a second-inning home run by Clark expected a sacrifice-bunt attempt from Rangers second baseman Luis Alicea Helton and Castilla charged for the bunt but Lansing worked his way behind Helling at second base Thomson wheeled and delivered an accurate throw to Lansing who tagged Helling for the pickoff The Rangers further ran out of what once appeared to be a potential big inning when Manwanng DK Learning FW Botanic Gardens FW Museum of Science History FW Symphony Orchestra Fort Worth Zoo Thistle Hi Texas AB Bl BB SO Avg TGooowincf 5 0 2 0
