Jones, Managing Editor Donal Parker, Advertising Mgr k C. M. (Pod) Rogers, Jr. Circulation Manager Billy Dan Jones Mechanical Superintendent Second-class postage paid at Hope, Arkansas Member of the Audit Bureau of Circulations Expert South's bid of seven no-trump was an overbid and he knew it, but he also had great confidence in his ability to play the dummy. When he looked at dummy he counted 12 top tricks. The grand slam would be a cinch if hearts broke. Otherwise he needed some sort of squeeze for his 13th trick. He ran off three more diamond tricks to start proceedings. East discarded the four of spades, West, the four of hearts. Dummy's last diamond was played next. East had a problem here but let the 10 of spades go while West dropped the five of hearts. South's three discards had been the jack and two other clubs. South decided that East was holding five hearts and would keep on holding them. Therefore, if he played the king of spades and continued with the ace, East would be down to one black card and it surely would be a club. Sure enough East followed the first spade but dropped a club on the second. Now South ran off his top hearts. On the fourth heart West had the choice of holding two black queens or letting the queen of spades go. Since dummy was back of him with the ace and one club and the nine of spades, it didn't matter. Either play was death. "Nice squeeze," said East. "Too bad my partner didn't open a club and break it up." "I'd have made it anyway," said South. "How about a spade lead?", asked West. "No difference," replied South. "The grand slam was unbeatable the way the cards lay." South was right. You readers may enjoy working out both lines of play before tomorrow's article, in which we will give them. Don't be upset if you don't see them. Neither line of play is evident, (Newspaper Enterprise Ann.) 4 Q—The bidding has been: West North East South IV Pass 3V 4* 4 ¥ Dble Pass 5 • Dble Pass Pass ? You, South, hold: 46 *AKQ854 #K Q J 10 7 4 What do you do now? A—Pass or redouble. You expect to make this contract and should redouble if you think your opponents will stand for it. If you think one of them will run, then take the satisfactory doubled contract. TODAY'S QUESTION Instead of bidding one heart, West passes over one diamond. Your partner bids one spade, East passes. You bid three clubs and your partner bids four spades, What do you do now? Answer Tomorrow HAPPY IN LOVE is Norway's fairy-tale couple: Sonja Haraldsen, the merchant's daughter, and Crown Prince Harald, her fiance.
