3 THE KANSAS CITY STAR, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1965 Bengals Roar Again as Air Strike Sets Up Second Touchdown But Official Ruled His Knee Touched at the 2. M. U. Scored on Next Play. Waller Tumbles Into End Zone for Apparent T.

D. Waller Beats Kaye Carstens to the Punch. From Ills 21. Lane Cuts Loose. Huskers Overcome 14-Point Deficit Missouri played an inspired game and came so close to winning that the might-have-beens are something Missouri fans will be agonizing over for weeks to come.

Lane was the Tigers outstanding offensive performer, accounting for 91 yards passing and 64 running. Reese carried 20 times and gained 60 yards. Duda, who had an outstanding day for the Huskers, ran for 76 yards and threw for 52. The Tigers effort unquestionably was their best of the year. The difference between the two teams was two points but perhaps it should have been expressed in decimals.

choltz kicked his field goal with 5:56 remaining. The Tigers still had time to counterattack and for a time it appeared they would pull off a rally. A 14-yard run by Lane moved the ball to the Nebraska 43. The Tigers gained five yards in three plays and then Earl Denny was thrown for a yard loss. At this juncture only two minutes and 57 seconds remained in the game and the Tigefs hopes were shattered.

The Huskers, who had 318 yards of total offense compared to 243 for the Tigers, established the fact that they are physically stronger than the Tigers but WSN The. key play in the drive came at the Missouri 40 when the Huskers were faced with a fourth-and-one situation. With the middle clogged, Duda faked a handoff into the line, swung wide to his left and went all the way to the 1. The Tigers were so completely fooled that there was no one in front of him once he turned the corner. He was finally pulled down from behind, but Tatman went over on the next play and the Huskers trailed by only a point.

Wachholtz attempted to kick the extra point but the kick was wide and the Tigers held a 14-13 lead at halftime. The momentum of the game had now clearly swang to Nebraska. It seemed doubtful the Tigers would be able to contain Nebraska in the second half, but the Missouri defense proved to be stronger and more durable than anyone had reason to expect. Neither team was able to raise a scoring threat in the third period. Nebraska was unable to move any deeper than the Missouri 45.

Missouri had one scoring chance when Ken Boston intercepted a pass on the Nebraska 36 and returned it to the 29. Two plays later the Huskers got the ball back on an interception. Nebraska moved toward its game winning field goal with 11 minutes remaining. The drive consumed 11 plays and was successfully concluded when Wac- a THE BOOTtllAT BROUGHT VICTORY Larry Wachholtz of Nebraska prepares to put his toe into the ball for the field goal that made the difference in the Hnskers 16-14 victory over Missouri. Rich Bern- sen got through too late to block the kick.

Post-Game Talk Centers on Penalty HUSKERS AVOID PANIC BUTTON (Continued From Page IS) suddenly the Tigers become fanatically inspired.

Lane circled his right end for eight yards and in three more plays the Tigers reached the Nebraska 46; a holding penalty set the Tigers back but at this stage it seemed that neither penalties nor mere mortals could top them. Lane fired a pass to Monroe Phelps that was good for 41 yards to the Nebraska 23. Phelps picked up a yard and then Lane ran a keeper around his right end for a touchdown. He shook off one tackier at the 20 and sidestepped another at the 10. Bill Bates kicked the extra point and the score was 7-0 with 9:29 remaining in the quarter.

The Nebraska supporters, attired in fiery red coats, hats and dresses, settled back to await a stroke of retaliation but it. did not come. Roland Picks Off Pass The Tigers kicked off and the Huskers put the ball in play on their 27. Harry Wilson gained three yards. Fred Duda attempted to pass but Johnny Roland picked off the ball on the 38 and returned it to the 29.

A clipping penalty against Missouri moved the ball to the Nebaska 49. Missouri scored in nine plays, with fullback Carl Reese going over from about a yard and a half out. The longest gain of the drive came on a 19-yard pass from Lane to Waller that moved the ball to the 2. Bates again kicked the extra point. The score was 14-0 with 4:45 remaining in the period.

The Missouri partisans were on their feet cheering wildly while the Nebraskans sat in dumb disbelief. Nebraska is not the type of team that is going to be run out of anybodys stadium, however, and in the second quarter the Huskers seized control of the game. Nebraska scored its first touchdown with 9:32 left in the second quarter on a 4-play drive that covered 57 yards. Harry Wilson gained four yards following a Missouri punt. Duda passed to Freeman White for 16 yards and then Wilson broke over left tackle and raced 36 yards to the 1 with the help of a key block by Frank Solich.

Pete Tatman went over and Wachholtz kicked the extra point. Nebraska scored again on its next possession, starting from its 11. The Huskers covered the 89 yards in 14 plays as they put on their most impressive power display of the afternoon. Nebraska-Missouri Line-Ups COMPLETE TRUCK RENTAL SERVICE BY DAY, WEEK. MONTH.

He added, Nebraska is a talented and poised football team. They do everything well. Their defense really hurt us.

That last half was a stand-off. The Momentum Switches Then he gave another faint smile and said, When you talk about momentum how we had it, lost it and they got it maybe the turning point of the game came when Wilson enrolled at Nebraska. But there were no other smiles. This was a bleak day for Devine and it wasnt just the outcome of the game that darkened it. Just before the kick-off, he was notifed of the death of his best friend Gene Hooks, cattleman from Williamsburg, who has been Devines staunchest supporter at M.

U. Hook, 52, died of a heart attack in his home Friday night. Even in his sadness, however, Devine again took time to say how proud he was of his team and the job his staff had done in preparing it for this game. He added, Nebraska should be proud, too. Maybe the best sum-up came from a member of the Missouri staff.

He said, Its hard to believe we could play this well and lose. (Continued From Page IS) ways are. But Ill say this: all the real mistakes made today were mine; they werent made by the boys. He was asked if that included the remark that brought on the penalty. He smiled for the first time and said, I probably would have said something a lot worse than that.

Key Play Cited The play Devine regretted in particular came with 1:44 left in the third quarter. Ken Boston had just intercepted a Nebraska pass and had run it back to the Huskers 28. On second down, M. U. went for the bundle.

Lane tried to hit halfback Earl Denny with a long pass. It was picked off by Nebraskas Marv Mueller on the Huskers 8 and returned to the M. U. 34. That Mueller is playing in place of their regular (Ted) Vactor, all-conference last season but nursing a bad ankle this season.

We thought it would be the place to hit. It wasnt. If I had it to do over again, we wouldnt pass. But we thought we needed the big play. That lopked like the time.

Asked to compare yesterdays comeback with the one N. U. pulled off last year against Minnesota, Devaney said, This was a different kind of comeback. We used the long strikes against Minnesota. We did it the hard way here.

The Cornhusker head man professed his theories on what he planned as to punting strategy when N. U. was forced to give up the ball with 51 seconds remaining in the game. A punt that would have fallen dead on the 5-yard line would have been nice there, but we knew Missouri has a good field goal kicker and figured it was best to kick the ball inthe end m- for now zone and make them start from t-. wa Stith.
