HAVE you ever longed to be able to tune in television without hearing the studio audiences being cajoled into applauding wildly when only a polite handclap was warranted; to watch a musical or dramatic program without measured interruptions for the hucksters; to get informational and public affairs programs without arising at the crack of dawn or staying home from church? Its possible you know. And more and more persons in Kansas City are becoming aware of this oasis in the airwaves known as National Educational Television which is available on KCSD-TV, channel 19, in Kansas City. With all television sets manufactured after April 30, this year, required by law to be equipped to receive channels 2 through 83, the 70 UHF channels now can be received on newly purchased sets, wherever such channels are In operation, without expensive modifications. Channel 19, operated by the Kansas City school district, and a member of the National Educational Television Network, is in the UHF and it now can be dialed almost as easily as the VHF channels, 2 through 13, on all new sets. KCSD-TV, with the advent ef the new season, increased its radiated power 12-fold, from 17.4 to 209 kilowatts.

This power boost has made it possible to receive channel 19 over a ranch wider area than previously without the Installatioa of an outside antenna, many persons have discovered. It is impossible to determine how many people, in the Kansas City area have UlIF-equipped sets and are able to receive channel 19, but the numbers are increasing steadily as new sets are purchased. Eventually, everyone will have an UHF-equipped set. THE REWARDS are substantial. The viewer of NET gets the kind of programing rarely, if at all, available from any other source, at least in prime time evening hours.

Channel 19 operates in the daytime from 8:30 a. m. to 3 p. or later on weekdays for in-school programs. At 6:30 p.

m. to 9:30 p. m. or later Monday through Friday, the station is programed largely for the adult audience. Tbe schedule includes discussion programs, documentaries, science, drama, mnsic, public affairs, nature series and travelogues, among others.

Among the public affairs programs is one called Changing World. A bi-monthly series, of 1-hour documentaries, it looks at the vast changes under way over the world from Brazil to Southeast Asia and points up their relationships to developments elsewhere. Americas Crises, looks at the larger issues facing this generation of Americans. Spectrum is a weekly magazine of tbe sciences that covers scientific developments here and abroad. Challenge, a 9-program series, focuses on advanced nuclear investigation.

ANOTHER SERIES in tbe public affairs group is called At Issue. It examines immediate news developments in depth. A special program scheduled for December will be a 1-hour documentary on the Atomic Energy commission. A current series is called Focus on the United Nations and it keeps abreast of develqpments in that body. The weekly Festival of Arts series includes full-length symphony concerts, ballets and plays.

Last Friday night, NET presented Essay an Death, a special commemorative essay oa the assassination of President Kennedy. At. first It seems rather spooky and the viewer isn't aware another program has started. When you know what to. expect, it is something to savor peace! We dont say you will like all the programs on NET. Senna suffer from stuffy presentation.

But on the whole, tbe programs are interesting and satisfying. Most of them will make you think. None of them will insult your intelligence. SHORT TAKES NBC will sw itch The Man from U. N.

C. L. E. to Monday night to fill in for the departing Harris Against the World and Tom, Dick and Mary segments of 90 Bristol Court. The teen-age influence and success of Shindig and all the Beatles, Dave Clark Five, appearances on TV dictated the replacement for U.

N. C. L. E. on the Tuesday night lineup of the network.

NBC will put In a musical variety series called Hullabaloo. The accent will be on rock roll groups, teen-age singers and marching bands. Speaking of Shindig, it will be expanded to a full hour in a couple of months when Mickey, the comedy series starring Mickey Rooney, is dropped. Last weeks full-hour was in the nature of a teaser. BQ Cosby, 26-year-old Negro comedian, will be the co-star of a new series on NBC next season.

He has been signed to appear opposite Robert Culp in 1 Spy, an international intrigue series. They will portray agents of the C. I. A. Victor Barge has made a half-hour pilot film for projected TV series called Mr.

Belvedere. He will portray a humorous character with dry wit who speaks eight languages and, by coincidence, plays tbe piano. Tbe pilot will be financed by a national foods company which is expected to, seek a network berth for tbe series. Sophia Loren In Rome was by far the best of the TV specials of that nature. Miss Loren was charming and witty and the tour of Rome was Intensely interesting and breathtaking In color.

Dean Martia has been signed by NBC to star in his own full-hour variety series next season Tbe Imposters, a comedy series starring Jim Chyle and Mai Sharpe, radio-TV recording pranksters, is slated for ABC In the 1965-1966 season. Eduard Franz and James Daly have been added to the cast of Hallmarks The Magnificent Yankee which is scheduled for January 28. Alfred Last and Lyaa Foutauae will star. PeDy Bergen will star in a new half-bour sophisticated adventure series based on the Selena Mead stories hi This Week magazine. It is planned for next season on CBS.

Another new series in foe works may. star Jerry Vam Dyke in a comedy called My Mother, foe Car. Jerry plays a son whose deceased mother returns to earth as a car.
