Bnt that drive really hurt because it put us three touchdowns behind.

No one figured it really would have made much difference Kansas had stopped the Huskers then, though. It seemed inevitable that they were going to run and keep on running until it was time for the reserves to get their exercise. BUSINESS IS FINE AT ANDT KLEIN' i W3 be interpreted as encouraging? Mitchell didnt even hesitate before he answered, Well, I didnt feel we were dead on offense. We moved the ball pretty well a few times, but we just couldn't stop them enough to get many opportunities. When we came into the game, I felt we could contain em to a certain degree, bnt thought they would crowd us so much on defense that they would force us into fumbles and errors.

If our defense hadnt fallen apart so completely, I think maybe we could have kept the score respectable. Our offensive line did a pretty good job most of the time. The 'holes were there, but we just dont have the speed to take advantage of them often enough. When our backs did get there soon enough, they were able to pick up good yardage. Huskers Gamble Early Mitchell was asked if any of the Huskers particularly im- i pressed him.

He grinned and replied, Yeah. Just start at the top of their roster and go all the way to the bottom. Another question brought a snort from the K. U. -coach, who was asked what he thought about the Huskers going for a first down when they had fourth down and inches to go on their own 12 midway through the second period when they had a 14-0 lead.

Shoot, I dont blame em, he said. If we could pick up i 3 a Coleman and Peterson Give Chase for Kansas. Coleman Gets a Piece of Kirklands Jersey. EXEC. Coach Jack Mitchell of K. U. is on the ratings board for one of the wire services. Ive been voting for them (the Huskers) all season as No. 1, he said in the dressing room after the game as the tired Jayhawks quietly nursed their aches and bruises.

I believe this is the best team weve ever faced, he continued. Well, maybe you better make that one of the top two or three because I remember some of those great Syracuse teams a few years back. Mitchell Praises N. U. This gang reminds me a lot of those Syracuse teams, too, because it is so tremendous physically.

Theres great size, plus speed. You can stop their patterns pretty well, but those backs are so strong they still make good yardage against you. Mitchell pointed out that Tom Triplett, the K. U. scont, came back last week and reported he considered this Nebraska team better than the Sooner teams that ran np the 47-game winning streak from 1953 to 1957.

Theres no way you can really compare teams that played in different eras like that, Mitchell said after taking a gulp of a soft drink, but I'll say this, thats a great team. Ill be perfectly honest. I didn't think any team in the nation could take the ball and drive on us like those guys did. Of course, I don tthink anyone has played em as badly this season as w-e did and I also feel theyve played some worse teams than we have. Lefcnse Irks Coach We havent looked that bad on defense all year, but we certainly haven't played anyone like Nebraska, either.

Was there anything that could Kansas-Nebraska Line-Ups ikers didn't think of Western 1 'mnn. The defeat ranks among the worst eer snffered by a Kansas team in the eight years that Mitchell has been head roach. Mitchell's most lop-sided defeat was a 43-0 thumping administered by Oklahoma in 1958. Kansas snffered a 42-0 loss to Texas Christian the same year. The defeat was the second most decisive in the history of the series.

Nebraska posted its hjggest margin of victory in 1940 hen it defeated K. 53-2. Yesterdays victory was the straight for the Huskers and gives them a 5-0 record in -Rig Eight competition. With only Oklahoma State and Oklahoma remaining on their sched--ule, the Huskers appear certain I of going on to the conference ti--tle and an undefeated season. If finish undefeated, the Huskers are expected to go to either the Cotton or Orange bowls.

Triumph Seems Easy s. Yesterday's rout of Kansas was awesome because of the seeming ease with which it was accomplished. The Jayhwks didn't quit. They resisted fiercely. hut their case was as hopeless as that of a featherweight fighting a heavyweight.

Nebraska gained 419 yards rushing for its top total of the season and added 91 yards in completing eight of 18 passes. The Huskers did display one weakness, they averaged only 28 yards punting. It wasnt really a fair test, however, since they punted only twice. Halfback Ron Kirkland gained 117 yards rushing. Harry Wilson had BO and Ben Gregory 50; Nebraskas versatility was emphasized by the fact that its touchdowns were scored by six different players.

(AP) Kentucky, led by the running of Rodger Bird, enhanced its chances of a bowl bid by dumping Vanderbilt, 34-0, in a Southeastern conference football game yesterday. The Wildcats. lOth-ranked, rewrote the script by turning from a potent passing attack to a dynamic ground game and made a shambles of Vandys defense, which was tops in the S. E. C.

Bird set Kentucky career and season rushing records by scoring four of the touchdowns. The second time it got the ball, Kentucky marched 55 yards in five plays, with Bird going through left tackle on a 32-yard touchdown sprint. their fifth touchdown. Chtirchich passed to Richnafsky for the score with 1:50 remaining in the third period. The Huskers scored a minute and 26 seconds later after Kaye Carstens intercepted a pass on the Kansas 39 and returned it to the 7 to set up the tally.

Nebraska, however, was even more effective than expected and so the Javhawks early offensive industry profited them nothing in the long run. Nebraska was so supremely confident that it gambled on making a first down midway in the second period when it came up inches short on fourth down at its own 12. In the last half, the Huskers were so completely in command that they did not have to punt.

The Nebraska fans, who are as bloodthirsty as Oklahoma fans were back in the Sooners glory days, suffered a bitter disappointment in the opening minutes of the game when the Huskers failed to score on their first possession. The Huskers made amends by-drawing their first measure of Jayhawk blood on their second possession. They took over on their 39 following a punt and covered the 61 yards in nine plays, with Kirkland going around his right end for the touchdown. The longest gain on the drive was a 15-yard run by Wilson. Larry Wachholtz added tiie first of his six extra points.

Huskers Strike Fast On its next possession. Nebraska went 59 yards in eight plays to score with 20 seconds remaining in the first period. A 4(l-yarH run by Kirkland was the big gain in the drive. Gregory went over from the 3. The score became 21-0 late in he second period when the Hus-lers drove 97 yards in 10 plays.
