EHHH Divine Sarah Expresses Her Re pret That She Could Not Appear Hefore Van couverites. PASSED THROUGH CITY ON WAY TO VICTORIA Great Actress Recalls Previous Visit When She Shot Duck in Rurrard Inlet. "I simply adore Vancouver and I think it the most betautlfully situated Urge city In the world," declared Mme. Sarah Bernhardt, the world famous actress, who passed through Vancouver today en route from Winnipeg to Victoria, where she fills a two day en B.igemont. In the cosy drawing room of her private car, Colonial, this skittish young uctrcss of sixty eljrht was simply bubbling over with enthusiasm about her tour through the west and especially regarding Vancouver, about which she had heard so much since the last of her two previous visits here.

As a rule "the divine Sarah" does not consent to interviews, especially on American tours, as she is hardly ns fluent a conversationalist In English as In her native tongue. But she has one weakness if such it can bs called and that Is to get first hand impression, from westerners, who can speak French fluently. Knowing this. The World sent its linguistic expert to Mme. Bernhardt.

Byt the merest accident, after oeher newspapermen were declined an interview, Mme. Brnhardt overheard The World representative asking for her In French at the door of her private car. The noted tradeg ienne at once came out and overruling the dirtum of her servant, warmly greeted the newspaperman and Invited him in. About the first thing Mme. Bernhardt said wa to express her regret at not being able to appear In Vancouver, as she had retained some very pleasant memories of her two previous appearances in this city.

"You know. I adore Vancouver," she repeated in the purest French, "but my ensagements take me to Victoria and then south by way of Seattle. We had a elorious Journey crossing the Rockies. They were all covered with the beautiful white snow that I love so well. This western climate seems to agree with me in my old age." she said wih a charming smile.

"Ever since I ft Calgary and commenced to work westward I have enjoyed excellent health, and this coast air makes mc feel positively bouyant. "All the way down the Fraser and all along the Inlet here I have had my face glued to the car window, for I can scarcely realise the great changes, the magnificent improvements that have taken place all along the line, and especially in Vancouver and its vicinity. I cannot recognize a single feature that 1 remember from my previous visits except your beautiful mountains. "This beautiful bay that now has so many industries scattered along its snores, I can scarcely realize as the same watfr on which I went shooting ducks during my first visit here away back in 1891. A prominent C.

P. R. official took me up the Inlet in his launch in quest of ducks or other game which was quite plentiful then. Oui, and I bagged one, too," declared Mme. Bernhardt, with a triumphal smile.

"I would like to go again, but I afraid I am get ting too old, said this charming woman with a deprecatory smile, although at an honest to goodness estimate she would not be taken for more than a couple of years past thirty as she appeared today, dressed In clinging grey with touches of soft lace on her costume. Madame Bernhardt paid her second visit here about twelve years aao when she appeared at the old Vancouver Opera House, now torn down, playing "La Tosca" and "Fedora" during her two nights' engagement. On her present tour she has the distinction of receiving the largest saUry ever paid to any artist ill vaudeville. She la supported by a company of forty and is presenting single acts and extracts from some of the best known dramas In which she has appeared during the last half century, for she has been a stage star for fully that long. Mine, Bernhardt left at 2 o'clock on the Princess Adelaide for Victoria, where she appears tonight and tomorrow, A strong effort was made by Mr.

Doilgla. Crelghton, managing director of the National Amusement Company, to secure Mme. Bernhardt for two appearances at the new Columbia theatre. He offered Mr. Martin Beck, who Is managing Mme.

Bern hardt's western tour, practically his own terms and the deal was prac tically closed last week when rival theatrical Interests bid up the noted artiste's appearance here and made the ante finally so high that they were unable to handle It themselves. ii i IKE PLACE Designed for Gentlemen's Residential Quarters New Hotel Resembles Club. ARE CONVENTIONAL Two Opposition Representatives Subscribe to Custom in Hearing Speech From the Throne. VICTORIA. Jan. 17.

The provincial legislature Is today holding Its first business sitting of 1913 "business" consisting of the orthodox complimentary and congratulatory speeches by government supporter, eulogistic of the administration's policy and conduct of affairs. It is to be expected that both Mr. W. ,1. Manson, the mover, and Mr, .1.

(5. C. Wood, the seconder of the reply, will adhere closely to the optimistic contents of the speech from the throne, nor comment extensivoly. If at all. upon the public accounts tabled by Finnnco Minister KUison almost coln cldently with his honor's address, and which how that while last year there was a growth of revenue to report of almost two million dollars, this year's Increase Is only about ten per cent, of that sum, and on the other hand, whilo expenditures In 1910 11 amounted to $8,1 94,802.25, these have in the twelve months following leaped to (11,189.

024.35, an Increase of very close to three millions 2. 994. 221. 40 to be exact), in expenditure, while tho Increase of revenue totalled only $25 816.55. Interest In tne opening ceremonies yesterday centred largely upon the changed tactics of the Socialist opposition, for while Mr.

HawthornthwalH and Mr. Parker Williams studiously refrained from entering the chambef during the presence there of hlf majesty's representative, Messrs. Williams and Place subscribed to custom and were both In their places and upon their feet during his honor's attendance. Whether or not the changed ottltude of the Socialists will extend, to acceptance of Government Houstt Invitations in future remains to be observed. The crowded galleries yesterday were gay with handsomo toilettes, and there was much in evidence of a more sombre feminine contingent which represents the leaven of suffra gettlsm In this province, and which will later Jn the session be heard from when the petition, numerously signed from all parts of the country, Is presented, asking that the franchise be granted to women in British Columbia.

Today's speeches will bo limited in all probability to those of the mover and seconder of reply, the debate thereafter being adjourned until Monday by Mr. Williams or by some of the back bench members under the government banner. Some comment Is offered upon the ooursu taken by the member for Newcastle in declining to second Mr. Speaker Eberts' nomination, but he explains that conscientiously he could scarcely applaud Mr. Speaker's Invariable fairness wbvn he might, within the next forty eight hours, have occasion to call his Impartiality Into question.

"Besides." he added, "there surely are enough government followers this session to pay all the compliments necessary." SPECIAL CAR SERVICE FOR RURNABY ELECTORS For the accommodation of Burnaby electors residing In Vancouver who desire to take part In the municipal de tions occurring tomorrow, the B. Electric has arranged for a special service from the centre of the city to Boua dary road from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. TH. car will Ioave from the corner ef Cir rail and Hastings street hourly, at about the even hour, and from Boundary road at about the half hour.

A TIMBERS I HAVE STA1E BALL Washington Society Resents President Elect's Idea of Doing Away With Inaugural Ball. (I'nllrd World'. T.neil Wlre.l WASHINGTON', Jan. 17 Washington society la still Rasping today over President elect Woodrow Wilson's request for the aholishmcnt of the Inaugural hall. The lare indirect expense upon the government was Wilson's reason fir akin the omission of the usual blr function.

William Corcoran Kustis. chairman of the inaugural committee, and to whom Wilson's request was directed, is admittedly non plussed over the situation. As Washington merchants had subscribed $87,000 to help cover the expense, he called a meeting of the, committee this afternoon to consider the matter. It Is suggested as a way out that President elect Wilson and Mrs. Wilson hold an Informal reception In the capitol rotunda Instead of the ball.

A an Ottowan. born and bred, Mr. Fellowes has a direct Interest in the water supply of his native city, him! is in a position to speak with authority on the matter. Mr. Fellowes was some years ago entrusted with a similar question for Weatmount, with results that were eminently satisfactory.

Speaking of Mr. Fellowes as an engineer of acknowledged reputation, the Evening CltWn, of Ottawa, says: "In Vancouver, of which Mr. Fellowes Is supervising engineer, some sixty miles of sewers were laid during his short tenure of office, and other big projects handled. The engineering organisation of that city is admitted to be equalled by few in Canada, a tact which perhaps lends additional weight to the views of the man responsible for It." Man Found Dead This Morning Stated Yesterday He Knew Something of Person Missing From Bowen Island.

Kxercislng the minds of the city and provincial police is the question whether an unknown man, found dead this morning at the D. C. Bedding Company factory, 315 Front street, knew anything of the disappearance of William II. Clark from Bowen Island a week or ten days since. Hopeful that the dead man did not carry with him tot heg rave the history of the mystery.

Mrs. Davis, of 631 Howe street, has Identified the body as that of a man who called on her yesterday afternoon and declared that he knew something of the missing man. who was her brother. Hut any communication that the man might have hud to make cannot be made verbally now is his body was found early this morning In an out of the way part of the Bedding Company's factory. There was a small but ominous hole in the right templo and beside the body lay a revolver and a box of cartridges, one chamber of the wenpon being discharged.

What he knew of the missing man, Clark, he did not divulge yesterday, promising to eturn at night to talk the matter over with Mr. Davis. The deceased was about forty years of ase, roughly clad as a logger might be, but there was nothlntr on the body to identify it beyond a piece of paper heiirin'; the name and address, "Charles Davis, Ml Howe street." From this the police obtained the first clue which brought to light the man's mysterious movements yesterday. As the body was quite cold when found, and it was the opinion that he shot himself lnet night, the suicide theory takes precedence of any Idea that the man might have met with foul play.
