County Clerk Bv sElleen R. Tapla, Deputy Expires Dec. 31, 1987. GJ09JJ) Monday that there was such a man who he identified as Jerry Cohen. Lloyd cited earlier testimony from a man who was kidnapped and whose van was used in the holdup that there appeared to be another holdup man, and noted that several employees in the bank had testified that they heard the name "Jerry" used by the robbers.

Lloyd said Cohen escaped police by simply walking away from the bank parking lot after police fire killed the driver of the van as he tried to pull away from the bank. The other robbers commandeered a truck and took off without him, the attorney added. Lloyd told jurors that Cohen and brothers Billy and Manuel Delgado actually planned the holdup, and that Lloyd's client wanted no part of it. Billy Delgado, the getaway driver, was shot to death in the van by a sheriff's deputy. Manuel Associated Press VISTA A sixth man, who managed to elude police and is still at large, was one of the masterminds of the Norco bank robbery, an attorney for one of the three defendants in the robbery and murder trial said Monday.

Michael Lloyd, making his opening statement on behalf of defendant Christopher Harven, also said "his client did not participate in the oldup, contradicting an earlier statement that Harven made to officers. Three men Harven, his brother, Russell, and George Smith are currently on trial for their lives in connection with the May 9, 1980, bank robbery that left two other suspects and a Riverside County sheriff's deputy dead. At several points in the six-month trial, there have been references to the possibility of a sixth holdup man. Lloyd flatly stated Delgado was shot by deputies in the San Gabriel Mountains near Lytle Creek, after a wild 40-mile chase. Prosecutor Jay Hanks of the Riverside County district attorney's office just rolled his eyes when asked outside the courtroom to comment on Lloyd's theory.

"It seems rather convenient that of the three who Mr. Lloyd now says planned all this, two are dead and the third is nowhere to be found," Hanks said. Hanks also seemed somewhat perturbed that Lloyd had never given Jerry Cohen's name to law enforcement officials. Lloyd's response to that: "I had my own investigators looking for him, and I didn't trust giving the name to In his opening statement, Lloyd said all 45 counts against each of the three defendants are "all violent crimes. 31, 1987. Hit, tWt SJSSJ2. SCE urges conservation in hot summer months SAN BERNARDINO With hot summer weather ahead, Southern California Edison Co. officials urge self -discipline in the use of electricity particularly air conditioning to help lessen electric bills. "Conservation is the only solution," said J.M.

Falkner, SCE's San BernardinoGrand TerraceColton area manager. Because of inflation and fuel cost increases, the cost to Edison to generate customers' electricity has risen since last summer, Falkner said. "For those living in this high-temperature area, practicing conservation will mean some difficult decisions, particularly on comfort levels when using air conditioners," Falkner stressed. By learning to read an electric meter, Falkner explained, customers may determine how much it costs to run air conditioners. He suggests that before hot weather arrives, customers read the meter and caluclate the amount of electricity now consumed.

Then, to ascertain the approximate cost to air condition the home, recheck the meter when use of the air conditioner begins then multiply the increase in kilowatt hours by 9 cents. Falkner said that since air conditioners work harder as the temperatures increase, it is wise to calculate the cost on a daily basis. In addition to careful monitoring and restricted use of the air conditioner, Falkner pointed up other energy-saving measures, including consulting an Edison energy service representative, who, with a phoned request, will conduct a home energy survey. Also, all Edison offices have brochures on insulation, window caulking, water-heater wrapping and other energy-saving tips. Lloyd said his client left the others after he learned that they had kidnapped a man and had picked up some explosives. The defense attorney said his client had tried to call his girlfriend to pick him up after leaving the others, and headed for the bank after he heard the commotion there.

Cohen ordered Christopher Harven into a getaway vehicle as the others were fleeing the bank, Lloyd maintained. Lloyd also said Christopher tried to get Manny Delgado to stop shooting at deputies, but Delgado threatened his life. Lloyd said Christopher became the getaway driver only after Cohen bailed out. He maintained his client never fired a weapon during the holdup or pursuit, and that he confessed to being in the bank and a participant only because deputies demanded it before allowing him to be treated for a gunshot wound. The trial was transferred from Riverside to San Diego County because of pretrial publicity.
