deputy The koochtted Press These are the murder convictions of Henry Lee Lucas listing the county of conviction date of offense when known outcome of trial or plea victim and sentence All are in Texas County 9-16-82 guilty plea on 9-30-83 Kate Rich 75 years 3 Denton County 8-24-82 jury verdict on 11-10-83 Freida Lorraine Powell life 4 Huntington WVa Cabe II County 8-3-76 guilty plea on 1- 22-85 Clemmie Curtis life without parole 5 Harrison County 11-1-77 guilty plea on 1-25-85 Lillie Pearl Darty 60 years 6 Terry County guilty plea on 9-29-84 Dianna Lynn Bryant 75 years The Associated Press HUNTSVILLE Three-time convicted burglar Johnny Pyles was executed yesterday for gunning down a Dallas County sheriff's deputy 16 years ago Pyles 40 was pronounced dead at 6:24 pm eight minutes after a dose of lethal drugs was released into his arms In his last statement Pyles turned to the widow and four other friends and relatives of the deputy and expressed remorse for his crime "I have a love in my heart for you I hope you don't look for satisfaction or comfort or peace in my execution" Pyles said "I'm sorry for the pain and heartache I've caused your family Too many years I've caused all my family problems and heartache" Then he said that he had given his life to Jesus and soon would inmate put to death is guilty "I am concerned that there are some who have expressed some doubt as to whether or not he committed this particular crime" Bush said "Therefore I have urged the pardons and parole board to make sure that the allegations that he may not have committed this crime are fully vetted" Bush said Lucas has a final appeal pending before the US Supreme Court and his lawyers have filed a petition for clemency with the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles Under Texas law Lucas must convince a majority of the 18- member parole board that he deserves clemency for the board to make such a recommendation That recommendation then would go to Bush who could grant clemency or allow the execution The Associated Press AUSTIN Gov George Bush said yesterday that he is bothered by questions about the guilt of confessed serial killer Henry Lee Lucas and has asked the state Board of Pardons and Paroles to review the case Lucas who confessed to as many as 600 killings is scheduled to be executed June 30 in the slaying of an unidentified woman whose body clad only in orange socks was found near Georgetown in 1979 Although prosecutors say they have no doubt Lucas committed the crime and he confessed to it investigations by the news media and a former attorney general have cast transferred from a Michigan prison to a state hospital in Ionia Mich In August 1961 and was discharged in 1975 His record also includes imprisonment in a Virginia state penitentiary from 1953 to 1956 Texas inmate executed this year and the second in five days He contended the fatal shooting of 34-year-old deputy Ray Edward Kovar in a rural area east of Dallas was in self-defense He was on parole after a second prison term for burglary and was casing a closed grocery store in Sunnyvale in the early morning hours of June 20 1982 when hes was confronted by Kovar who had been summoned to the scene after a motorist reported seeing someone in the darkened store Pyles armed with a 38-ca1ibell pistol stolen earlier in anothavs break-in said he was surprised the deputy and began shooting Kovar
