9 V1N39VIAI HOVIfl e08l.60-9-3N33S-33a3VS Thursday, September 1 8, 2003 The Sacramento Bee E5 Du Lac: The Dave is dumped by KWOD Dance: Gestures reflect edginess of Bartok music CONTINUED FROM El towers left us with a sense of hope. "All Fours," while less riveting, proved impressive for a different reason. The music of Hungarian composer Bela Bartok is often edgy and unpredictable. The dancers helped us make sense of it with gestures that reflected certain elements in the music. To an uneasy muttering in the strings, dancers skittered away from each other.

Pizzicato, or plucked, strings called for rapid footwork. Rather than being performed at the same time, movements often flowed over the group like a wave. This allowed viewers to grasp the single gesture before appreciating the pattern it formed on a larger scale. Chuckles rippled through Jackson Hall during "Going Away Party," a work set to Western swing by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. Four men and three women cavorted to songs such as "Milk Cow Blues" and "Baby, That Sure Would Go Good." Swivel-hipped and happy, they waved, blew kisses and spun each other around.

While not technically dazzling, its insistent good nature made it easy to like. In "A Spell," movement evoked both the elegant lyrics of songs such as "Take, Take Those Lips Away" and the earthy sensuality they imply. A charming and expressive Cupid was an excellent foil to an intimate couple. All music was performed live (except the Bob Wills tunes, of course). The musicians added to the intoxication of live performance the sense of shared experience, of unexpectedness, of the simple magic of presence.

The Bee's Rasmi Simhan can be reached at (916) 321-1071 or rsimhansacbee.com. "The fans love Grant, Jerry, Koz and Gary," he says. Wait, no Rupe the Hoop, the off-court jester with the hokey half-time TV segments? "As far as I know, he's coming back, too," Thomas says. Too bad. Rocked: Last month, the alt-rock station KWOD (106.5 FM) staged a tongue-in-cheek benefit fund-raiser to raise money for charity.

The event was dubbed "Save The Dave," after the station's single-named morning-show dude. Oh, the irony. On Friday, The Dave could not be saved he was turned loose by KWOD management. The other half of the "The Morning KWOD," Boomer, will remain at the station. "I put the show together 2r2 years ago in the hopes it would be a big success," program director Ron Bunce says.

"While we've had some mild successes in that span, I thought we could do a lot better. "Having put the show together, I really wanted it to succeed. But the chemistry wasn't there." Bunce says he's now searching for a new on-air partner or partners for Boomer, who has worked with The Dave on and off in various markets for a decade. As for The Dave, he says the decision took him by surprise. But, he says: "I hold no ill will toward the station." CONTINUED FROM El west.) Though it's close to being ready for launch, according to Thomas, the network still does not exist.

So, team and industry sources say, the Kings have spent a good part of the summer attempting to sign a new, short-term deal with FSN Bay Area. But those negotiations appear to have stalled if not come to a complete stop, those sources say. One Kings executive even declared privately this month that "there will be no deal with Fox Sports." Thomas disputes that claim. "I think that would be premature," he says. "We haven't heard that from anyone at this point -whether it be from Fox or anywhere else.

"There are a lot of options available to us, and we're exploring them all." Jeff Krolik, the senior vice president and general manager for FSN Bay Area, declines, through a spokesman, to discuss negotiations with the Kings, citing network policy. "The only time we comment on team contracts is when we announce a new deal or extension," Krolik says through the spokesman. If the Kings don't work out a deal with Fox and are unable to launch its regional network this season, it's unclear what other options the team has. At the moment, his future is uncertain. "I have no idea what I'm going to do," he says.

"I'm exploring options in the market. I don't want to leave Sacramento, but I might have to if I want to stay in the business." Meanwhile, that makes two job openings for KWOD, after the evening jock, Capone, resigned Wednesday afternoon, citing personal reasons. "That was a surprise to us," Bunce says. Capone could not be reached for comment. Don of a new era: "The Don Mike Show" has been airing in "best-of rerun form for the past week, while Washington, D.C.-based hosts Don Geronimo and Mike O'Meara do battle with syndicate Westwood One over their contract.

But Sports 1140 (KTHK) program director Mike Remy says the duo has agreed in principle to a new syndication deal and could be back on the air today or Friday. Just in time, too: Arbitron's seasonal radio ratings book opens today. In the spring book, "The Don Mike Show" airing weekdays from noon to 4 p.m. on KHTK was No. 1 in Sacramento among men 18 to 49.

The Bee's J. Freedom du Lac can be reached at (916) 321-1115or jdulacsacbee.com. As one broadcasting executive says: "They maybe stuck. Where are they going to go?" Well, not to cable Channel 7 (KVIE) though at one point this summer, that was apparently a very distinct possibility. One that the public TV station's president and general manager, David Hosley, talked over with Thomas.

"We were discussing a number of business opportunities," Hosley says. "It never centered on (televising games), but it was one of the things we were talking about. But it's not going to happen. Too bad, because it would have been interesting to see how the two sides would have dealt with the public-broadcasting commercial restrictions not to mention the inevitable backlash from KVIE members. Up close and personnel: while the Kings may not know where or even if their games will appear on cable, they do know who will be announcing and analyzing them.

Maloof president Thomas says the complete broadcast crew is coming back: the TV team of Grant Napear and Jerry Reynolds; radio guy Gary Gerould; and reporterhalf-time host Jim Kozimor. The contracts for all four expired at the conclusion of the 2002-2003 season, but Thomas says they've all been offered new multiyear deals.
