Besides WTTW-TV and Philadelphia's WIIYY-TV, the six stations included WPBT-TV in Miami; WYES-TV in New Orleans; KCSM-TV in San Mateo; WIPB-TV in Muncie, Ind. The remaining two stations WNET-TV in New York and WQED-TV in Pittsburgh offered expanded on-air credits to program underwriters and ended up with a net gain of $767,000 after deducting expenses, the report states. ing stations could either attempt to sell commercial time or offer corporate underwriters expanded credits at the beginning and end of any program they helped fund. If advertising time was sold, commercials had to be clustered at the beginning and end of programs and could not exceed two minutes in length. According to the association's report, six stations "actively sold advertising messages," while two others offered the expanded underwriting credits.

The ninth station, WQLN-TV in Erie, abandoned its advertising sales efforts in November 1982 following a change in management at the station, the report said. The six stations which sold commercial time received gross revenues of $4.4 million, but spent $1.4 million in "direct expenses" for sales and production. That left them with a total of $3 million, the report 874- TWO 230 BASELINE StWXinHnCfSfOSStUUtWTSSSS CttlINS WITH MC CD i rwwm shuw oo umitio io im iNOA0tNTS txciuoio PIC TUnl ilMl tUT kt PARAMOUNT iioo, (3.00 a a.oo) yiis. 9is Ji i (Si i too) jo, iM Aderentklndofgam f1llk' Chase takes his lai. ftjk 1 rrn i on H.M i 4 1 'bjAf NATIONAL VI ,7 mff I LAMPN'S xg, (3i30 a a.oo) iroo, to.

The report, prepared by the National Association of Public Television Stations, also said the nine participating stations "reported minimal community reactions to advertising." "We received very few complaints, maybe two or three letters from people who didn't like the commercials," said Nessa Forman, a spokeswoman for WHYY-TV in Philadelphia. "For us, it was very worthwhile in demonstrating another means of support for public broadcasting. Now we just have to wait and see what Congress does." The special experiment was authorized by Congress in 1901 when it created the Temporary Commission on Alternative Financing for Public Telecommunications.

The group was assigned to explore fund-raising options for public television that might compensate for recent federal budget cutbacks. It authorized the advertising experiment in March 1982; the test period ended June 30. The temporary commission, chaired by James H. Quello, a member of the Federal Communications Commission, now must prepare a final report to Congress on the experiment, along with a recommendation on whether advertising should be authorized for all public TV stations. That report is due Oct.

1. In the meantime, the public TV association has been monitoring the experiment on its own and issuing periodic reports. Monday's report was the first to offer preliminary totals on how the nine stations did. SAN aERNAIOINO SS9-J3J) NBC's 'Search' turns up empty; soap will air live Thursday NEW YORK (AP) It seems that someone swiped the tape for Thursday's episode of "Search for Tomorrow," so the cast and crew will have to do the show live for the first time in 15 years, NBC said Monday. Joanna Lee, executive producer of TV's longest-running daytime serial, said the tape and a copy, made July 22, were left over the weekend in the editing room at a Manhattan studio. They were gone when the crew showed up for work the following Monday. "There's no proof," she said, "but I'm convinced it's a theft." She suggested no motive for the apparent pilfering. There was no time in the soap's busy shooting schedule to redo the episode, Lee said, so it was decided to go live.

"Search for Tomorrow," introduced on CBS in September 1951, was broadcast live until 1968. The show moved to NBC in March of last year. The cast for the episode to be broadcast Thursday includes Larry Haines, who has played Stu Bergman since the early days of the show, as well as Cain DeVore, who will make his debut as Danny Walton. The live half-hour show at 12:30 p.m. EDT will follow a dress rehearsal at 11 a.m.

The show will air on a tape-delay basis at its regular time of 11:30 a.m. PDT on the West Coast, said a spokeswoman for NBC in Los Angeles.
