1972 Vreeland Awards Are Presented 5 aturdoy, May 6 1972 Mncoln Star 3 CARMICHAEL Calvin Smalley, La Canada, nephew of the late Francis Williarn presented the 1972 Vreeland awards for creativity to six University of Nebraska-Lincoln students at ceremonies Friday afternoon in the Sheldon Gallery. Frof. Robert Spence, chairman of the NU art department, presided over the program at which two students each in the areas of art, music and English were honored. The fine arts awards are supported by proceeds from a bequest by Francis William Vreeland and the recipients are selected by a committee representing the three departments, aided by faculty nominations. Vreeland, an artist and native of Nebraska, was born at Seward in 1879.

The award In art carries his name, while those in music and English carry the names of his parents. The winners of this year's Francis William Vreeland awards in art are graduate student Dwaine Crigger of (reston, Iowa, and senior Steven Yates of Lincoln. trigger, son of and Dwaine Crigger Iowa Teresa Hietbrink Adams Michael Hoefs Arapahoe Debra Steven Hulbert Yates Lincoln Lincoln Francis Crigger of lives in Seward with his wife, Judy. He is completing work on a master of fine arts degree specializing in sculpture and has accepted an appointment as an assistant professor of art in a state colllege. Yates, son of Mr.

and Mrs. Thomas A. Yates. 7145 Oxford will receive a bachelor of fine arts degree in May and plans to continue his studies seeking a degree He submitted a portfolio of photographs and paintings in the competition. The $.700 Ida M.

Vreeland awards in music went to senior Teresa Hietbrink of Adams, who also won a 1971 award, and junior Michael D. Hoefs of Meet Star Carrier Terry Kurth Terry Kurth of Lincoln feels that he is gaining valuable business experience on his paper route.
