During World War II he was commissioned in the Medical Administrative Corps however he was assigned duty in the Quartermaster Corps to operate Army laundries Mr Henckels was a member of a pioneer Fort Worth family that was engaged in the laundry and linen supply business The Johnson Linen Supply was established in the late 1890s by his grandfather James Johnson Jr The firm was merged with the Natatorium Laundry Company when it was acquired in 1915 Mrs Madeline Johnson Henckels succeeded her father as head of the business and under her guidance the firms became two of the leaders in the Southwest After Mr Henckels returned from the service he was assigned the operating responsibilities and over the ensuing years he expanded and re-equipped the plant He also established an industrial laundry Texas Garment and Linen Service and became owner and chief executive officer overall During his business career he served for over 20 years as a director of the Texas Laundry Association He was elected president and at the time was the youngest person to hold that office He was also a director of the national association and for almost 20 years a director of a regional association As a sportsman he engaged in hydroplane racing for seven years as a young man and raced successfully throughout the country establishing six world records and winning three national championships He was also an avid hunter and golfer Mr Henckels was a member of River Crest Country Club the West Side Bicyle Club (a charitable organization) and the BCDHA He had memberships in the Steeplechase and the
