HI The Herald Thursday September 19 2002 brightens fall TV 4 plays from Edge to tickle you silly BY MARTA BARBER THEATER REVIEW IF YOU GO mbarberheraldcom Getting Hot consists of four short plays by two South Florida playwrights that add up to one delightful evening at the theater Presented by Edge Theatre at an intimate space in the Design District the four have two things in common: love and laughter Here however love is not interpreted in the traditional sense but no is at Piccadilly Gardens 35 NE 40th St Miami through Sept 28 8 pm Thursday-Saturday $10 305-531-6083 Kelly (Camille Carida) by breaking all the established rules of romance David Caudle is the author of the two middle plays The One Thing which ends the first act is the most complex and poetic of the one-act plays Duck (Agnew) and Dillard (AJ Solmon) are friends having a drink at a bar At a corner is Toots (Carida) an outgoing woman who brings friend Mairzy (Mel Markward) along Mairzy is shy and troubled So is Dillard Matchup attempts produce funny moments before the play turns somber Opening the second act is Feet of Clay a hilarious and well-written play about foot fetishes Agnew is Clay a guest at the country house of Vaughn (Solmon) who while both wives are away shopping confides to Clay about his weakness for feet One of the greater enjoyments came from the overall acting quality of the cast All showed fine comedic delivery and timing and the steady hand of director Marjorie is evident Though there are a couple of instances when the pace feels choppy and the timing slightly off makes these little jewels shine doubt laugh aplenty Dennis Jones is the playwright of the opening and closing plays: The Deluxe Option and The Cupid Contract Each has an imaginary character be it Cupid in the last or the voice behind a computerized navigational system in the first And both are instrumental in helping the real characters find the meaning of love The Deluxe Option has the driver (George Schiavone) of a rental car asking the computer Gina for directions Along the way Gina gets personal the dialogue metaphoric and the play thoughtful The Cupid fantasy character is an Italian version of Cupid (Schiavone) who helps Jerry (Mark Agnew) propose marriage to girlfriend fAtMFon Moms Information Amovt Tuts Movin' wiltili likely dolfocfsnapshots IBsvchofaid Ifotlshowers mm tract Hairir VANITY FAIK somethings convinced that high school ruined their lives beam themselves back to the 1980s to fix their mistakes Naturally they just mess things up more Do Over is played strictly for laughs some of which are pretty familiar if seen the Back to the Future movies Still I help laughing when time-traveling Joel Larson (Penn Badgley) turns on his TV and has a horrible epiphany: show for the next 20 years is going to be a Maybe just a TV critic thing What I Like About You pm Friday WBZL-WB 39 With her dad taking a job overseas dizzy 16-year-old Holly (Amanda Bynes The Amanda Show) has to move in with her sober-sided 28-year-old sister Valerie (Jennie Garth Beverly Hills 90210) hate says Valerie explaining her reluctance fear With good reason: Holly is a walking catastrophe Elevators mattresses skateboards: Everything attacks her With a charming and funny cast lots to like about What I Like About You Greetings From Tucson pm Friday WBZL-WB 39 A year ago network television have any shows about His-panics now got two Greetings From Tucson is superficially similar to the other sitcom bound to be unfairly cast as its rival The George Lopez Show both feature an upwardly mobile Mexican-American family But Tucson starring Pablo Santos and Rebecca Creskoff as a mixed-marriage couple is much edgier in confronting issues of class and ethnicity But it never loses its sense of humor Learning that his daughter is telling everyone Spanish Santos nods in approval: a sense of hopelessness that teaches the valuable life John Doe 9-10 pm Friday WSVN-Fox 7 A man wakes up naked on the beach knowing nothing about himself not his name or how he got there but everything else And I mean everything from the conjugation of Khmer verbs to the entire MS-DOS binary code So what is he? A space alien? Government lobotomy experiment? Bill first partner?
