HESITATE! SALES OF SUGAR Suoervisor Arthur Nelson Keep Closer Tab on Pur chases Made for Manufacturing. That many local confectioners and others engaged in the manufacture of commodities in which sugar is used have not been living up to the regulations put Into force by the Canada Food Board recently, is the information given out by Arthur Nelson, supervisor of sugar Bales in the confectionery business in British Columbia. As a result an order has Just been enacted by the food board giving Supervisor Nelson wider powers in dealing with these alleged infractions According to a wire received by Mr. Nelson this morning in future it will be necessary for nil grocers making a sule of sugar to satisfy themselves fir.t that it is not required for manufacturing purposes, it is jur ther stated that they must not make a sale of anv large quantity of sugar to a private party for private use, unless they know the person to whom they sell it, and are satisfied that it is not intended for manufacturing purposes. Failure to observe these regulations will result in cancellation of grocers' sugar supply licences.

Many confectioners have been obtaining sugar from grocers. Mr. Nel fon stated, and thus securing an additional amount to that allowed under the general order affecting the trade. 1 effort to put a stop to it the or der Just passed has been brought into effect, CARIBOO DISTRICT IS PRODUCING GOLD Famous Old Mining Area Gives Great Promise. The return of Mr.

B. B. McKay, of tho British Columbia branch of the Dominion Geological Survey, to the city and the submitting of his report to Mr. Charles Camsell, local superintendent, again places in tho limelight of provincial development the famous Cariboo district, which has produced all told over in gold. The report shows that despite the heavy increase in the cost of conducting mining operations and tho comparatively low, or standard, price of gold, production is going steadily on and in many sections of the Cariboo mining is in full swing.

Owing to tho peculiar formation of the coun irv Mr MpKiiv renorls that there are Ktiil nmnv areas which should Hno l.inro nnantities of gold, es pecially after the war when labor is not so sdarce or wages so high, and when the price of equipment will be considerably lower. Much of the geld wealth was secured only by deepi tunneling, at a time when labor and supplies cost heavily and work could not be carried on at that time in certain parts. The new methods in hydrauliclng, dredging, drag line scraping, are making possible the recovery of the gold in these areas, and yet the lack of adequate transportation is seriously retarding development on a large scale. In the Keith ley Creek and Harvey Creek areas there is also al most a total lack of wagonroads. Mr.

McKay brought in a complete report of the various operations be ing carried on a report which Indi i cates that there is still great promise for mining in the Cariboo.
