Nov. 27, 193 THI SUN f3 Hawaii Maui is the winter home of migrating humpback whales, making it one of the most renowned whale-watching areas in the world. Lahaina, the major 'city' on the west side of the Island, used to be a whaling port, but now is a charming place to spend an evening dining on whatever the seafood catch of the day is, strolling through its shops and, perhaps, sitting on a tavern balcony above the water for a nightcap. Deciding how to go: Package deals to Hawaii are in abdundance and can best be explored through a travel agent. But keep an eye out for advertised specials that sound appealing.

They can give your agent a place to start. One week, one-island trips to Oahu can be found for less than $300 per person which includes airfare, hotel and transportation between hotel and airport But two-island trips can vary from around $450 to nearly twice as much, depending upon class of hotels and whether a rental car is included. For those who have a place to stay in Hawaii, airfares are still going to cost at least $200 round trip, traveling during non-peak vacation periods. When to go: It's best to avoid the holidays, since you'll encounter more travelers and may pay more to boot But you never have to worry about the weather. Temperatures average out to 72 degrees in winter and 78 in summer.

The chance of getting caught in the rain is usually a function of where you are on the islands. There are desert-like regions and tropical rain forests. You could be on the wrong side of a mountain range and get wet, or be on the right side and be sunning yourself. Generally speaking, it rains more between November and April. some tennis courts at night a lead news item for two days.

A man's shed has burned down. And, of course, there are the helpful reports of whale sightings: 'Two cubs and mother are sunning one-half mile off Kahana." Maui has marvelously diverse topography for a piece of real estate 48 miles long. The diversity comes courtesy of Haleakala (which rises over 10,000 feet above the sea) and its neighboring peak which forms the other, smaller half of the hour glass. The twisting drive up the side of Haleakala virtually bare of trees at the top provides the big post-card view of the island. A better drive, however, for those who have the time and the endurance for a slow-paced ride, is along the Hana Coast to the tiny hamlet of Hana.

The drive, with more than 600 bends over its 50-odd miles, is a narrow and often bumpy route cut into the side of the mountain sloping down to the sea. What really makes the drive unique besides the spectacular coastline views are the 56 one-lane bridges that cross the streams and gullies. After this trip, you'll see waterfalls in your sleep. What else is Maui good for? It has the only winery on the islands an attempt to grow a white grape on the slopes of Haleakala is in the experimental stage. In the meantime, the fledging outfit makes and sells pineapple wine.

One of the newest industries in Hawaii is the protea business, which is flourishing on Maui. Pro-tea is a phenomenal flower with 1,400 varieties. The sharp colors and intricate, velvet-like textures of protea in bloom look more artificially sculpted and painted than natural. In Kula, where the drive up Haleakala begins, you can visit a farm or cooperative. is a visual feast.

You almost don't have to leave your car to enjoy the place, riding all day along the coasts, over mountain ranges, through pineapple fields and tropical flora. Just looking. If Oahu attracts more visitors than any of the other six Hawaiian islands, it's not because the others pale beside it. Oahu was just the first developed for visitors and is the most accessible. The new kid on the block is Maui, which has become the only other island now drawing more than a million visitors a year.

MAUI Maui is about a dozen vacations in one. You can spend all your time playing golf on the championship-caliber courses at the various new resorts which have sprung up here. You can sunbathe, swim and body surf at any of the numerous beaches. You can hike and camp in the massive crater of Haleakala, the volcano which dominates one half of this hour-glass-shaped island, or in the moist forests along the undeveloped Hana Coast. You can sail across the channels to neighboring Lanai or Molo-kai.

The best thing to do is pick one island or two for your vacation, stick with it, then plan to come back for another. Maui may be becoming the next big tourist spot in the islands, but it hasn't been spoiled, yet You can tell how small, provincial and unsophisticated it still is by listening to the news on a local radio station: An ambulance has been sent to a shopping center to rescue a pregnant woman experiencing labor pains. Citizens are in an uproar because the recreation department is turning off the lights on rr- (Continued from F-l) to give you a free rental-car to listen to their pitch. If you've got a few hours to waste on a meeting with salesmen, and a strong stomach, go ahead. A better thing to do in Waikiki is to get on a bus and go somewhere else snorkeling at Ha-nauma Bay or swimming or body-surfing at one of the eastern or northern beaches.

An even better thing to do in Waikiki is rent a car and spend your days exploring the island. Going to Hawaii and spending a week in Waikiki is like going to the Louvre and walking around the gift shop. Oahu is very manageable by car. The farthest point away from the Honolulu-Waikiki area is probably expansive Sunset Beach well-known for its surfing contests on the north shore, less than three hours leisurely driving time. In between are a remarkable number of sights and places to spend an hour or a day.

The best thing you can do for yourself is find a guidebook and a map, and design your day around your personal tastes. Among the more popular and best-known places to visit are the extinct volcanic crater of Diamond Head, the monumental Polynesian Cultural Center with its entertaining shows and faithfully constructed south seas village replicas and the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. But you can skip all three and still have a fascinating time on Oahu. Two personal favorite stops: Dillingham Field for a glider ride, and the Byodo-In Temple.

Dillingham Field is located at the opposite side of the island from Honolulu and is worth getting to. If you've never been in a glider, this is the perfect opportunity. The ride for one or two passengers lasts approximately 20 minutes, more or less, depending upon the amount of 'lift' available from the rising warm air above the field. The field is located at the base of the Waianae Mountain Range where it meets the north coast of Oahu. The ride, then, consists of grand circles out over the ocean and back again toward the mountains.

The flight alone, with the heavy swoosh of air rushing over the cockpit and the steeply-banked turns, is thrill enough for one not used to powerless gliding. But you're up there to watch, not just feel, and the views of the sandy-white coastline, the blues of the ocean and the jutting green mountain range in a sweeping kaleidoscope don't disappoint. The Byodo-In Temple is Pht by OaH FIiImt Surfer catches a wave off Lahaina in Maui mountains. In short, a perfect place to remember you're on vacation. But, of course, Oaho as a whole nestled at the base of the Koolau Mountains less than an hour from Honolulu.

It is a replica of a 900-year-old Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan and was built in 1968 to honor Hawaii's first Japanese immigrants. The grounds are located in a broad, green cemetery the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park and is suitably quiet and serene. The temple features a three-ton bronze bell you can ring, an 18-foot Buddha and several ponds teeming with thousands of brightly-colored carp considered bearers of good fortune in Japan. Bridges traverse narrow channels of the ponds, where the fish gather and literally climb furiously over each others' backs to be fed by visitors. You can get carp to eat out of your hand several inches above the water.

There are also peacocks strolling the grounds, but it's not exactly a wild animal park. Its attraction is the seductive peace and quiet, the immaculate grounds and the striking backdrop of the armour. our mr SERVICE TO YOU In English, Grman or Japan Inquire about our TRAVEL SCHOOL III 'SCfcVtCC 5VlansTTravel Service 37t NORTH WATERMAN AVENUE SUITE 104 SAN BERNARDINO 883-8801 HOURS: 9 A.M.-6 P.M.
