ASK HIGHER PAY Chief Points Out Cost ot Depart ment Much Below What It Was About Four Years Ago. MATTER IS LEFT OVER FOR THE WAR BOARD No More Permits for Tag Days Will be Issued by the City. No more permits for tag days ln Vancouver will be granted by Mayor Oalo, and pending receipt of definite Instruction from Ottawa regarding the War Charities Act, under which all permits for tag days will In future come, no tag days will be held.

At the meeting ot the police commissioners on Tuesday afteronon It was stated that the appointment of a local board for the administration of tho act had been requested, but up to the present tv word has been received from Ottawa. Under the act as It now reads, all applications coming within the scope of it, which includes, in addition to tag days, all other nchemes for raising money for patriotic purposes, must bo forwarded direct to Ottawa. Owing to the great delay which such a course will entail, it has been thought thut the appointment of a local hoard will do away with any nuch delays. A section In the act provides for the appointment of local boards. rollce Want More Pay.

Among other matters which came before the police commission at its final session. Was a petition from the members of the police force requesting an increase in pay, amounting to 20 per cent. It was pointed out by Chief l'ollce McHae that while the force Is considerably smaller than it was before the war broke out, and the work Is every bit as great for the force, the cost of giving has gone up. In 1914 there were 297 members on tho force, against 173 at present. Comparing tho expenditures of his department under the heading of sal aries, tho chief pointed out that In October.

1914. the cost to the city was 128,000, against $19,000 for the rirosent time. Last vear the expen ditures of the department amounted to 1210,782, as compared with 342. 819 for 1914. After Riving the matter some atten tion the commission decided to leave it over until the appointment of the new board had been announced bv I the government, TflK it was stated.

That it is possible the annual reports of all civic departments, hitherto compiled separately, may be published ln one book in future, thereby saving considerably In binding and paper and tho attendant expeune, vm tho otntpinent of Mayor (Sale. Chief Mcltae informed the commission that his annual report on the work of his department would be ready in time for consideration at the next meeting of the board. Gift for Soldiers' Club. By the sale of unclaimed property held at police headquarters recently, at which the sum of $175 was realized, the Returned Soldiers' Club will benefit to that extent.

Formerly the iiroi'ppiln of the sale went to the lo iico Mutual Heneflt Fund, but In viow nf tiin club's need for financial as aistnnre. Mavor Gale expressed the opinion that none would oppose hand Ine the money over to that cause. Tho Htindav selling question was brought up but was also shelved with other matters until the next meeting. Toward the cloHe of the meeting Harris Turner, the blind soldier member of the Saskatchewan legislature, was introduced to the commissioners, and in view of the fact that he is a former local police reporter was asked to respond to a resolution tendered the nreas by tho commissioners, expressing appreciation for the spirit of co operation wnicn nan uran um played toward the polrte during the year. Mr.

Turner mentioned Hint he had "covered" the police beat during tho regime) of Chiefs Chainborlln, Mul hern antl MacLennan and that since then hail observed how the police departments In many other cities in Canada operated. From his observation, he said, he still held tho belief (hat Vancouver had the best police force In Canada. Tel. Sey. 711.1 BRIDGE CLOSING PR0VJ5 (MLY Ladner Farmers Lose Heavily Through Not Getting Crops Sold to Markets in This City. DEMANDING ACTION BY AUTHORITIES Tug Owners Want Proposed New Structure Much Higher Than Old One. President Coleman, of Ladner Board of Trade, stated to The World today that If the people of Vancou ver only realized the great amount ot loss of food products occasioned by the closing of the Fraser Street bridge) and the lack ot facilities for getting same to market, they would rise up in indignant protest and demand action.

Mr. Coleman says that ln 1916 17 he hauled over 300 tons ot farm products of different descriptions to the city, whereas this year he has so far only managed to get about 40 tons through. His actual cash loss he es timates, will amount to the neighborhood of seven hundred or a thousand dollars, and other farmers have been losers to a similar or greater extent. "The crops are sold and cannot be delivered," added Mr. Coleman.

"With the closing of the bridge it means that to get to Van couver or South Vancouver, i and manv others would have to go via Eburne, which would mean at least eleven miles longer for the return trip. Outside of the great distance. there Is the difficulty ot negotiating Granville Street hill. "Talk about conservation," said Mr. Coleman, "If the authorities responsible, whether they be the South Vancouver council or the provincial government, would act more and talk less and Vet the bridge fixed up so that It could be used, they would bo doing real patriotic work and savlnp; food for the farmers, the people and the nation.

If there is a deadlock over Jurisdiction and as to who should repair the present bridge or build a. new bridge, let steps be taken so that transportation can be resumed and have the details settled afterwards," says Mr. Coleman, Tug Owners Desire. SOUTH VANCOUVER, Jan. 23.

Tug owners want tho proposed new Fraser Street bridge over the North Arm of the Fraser river built twenty feet higher than the present structure. and have approached the municipal authorities, through the li. C. Tug Association, with a request to that effect. They point out that if the bridge were that much higher the greater number of the tugs using the passage could go through without having the bridge opened.

The request does not appeal to the councillors, who hold that the tremendous extra expenditure which would be entailed would be quite un warranted by the advantage that would be gained. MAN WHO REFUSED TO MEET KING IS DEAD Quaker Courteously Told Edward VII Racing is Wrong. LONDON, Jan. 23. Joseph.

Clark wrote a dignified reply, explaining that as a Quaker he did not approve of horse racing and had never attended a horse race. While he appreciated the honor bestowed upon him by the king, he added, he must decline to break his rule even In this exceptional circumstance.
