Embargoed In Argentina After Disastrous Crash Buenos Aires CP) Argentina has imposed an embargo on the Moore-McCormack lines freighter Mormacsurf in the wake of her disastrous collision with an Argentine river steamer. 1 The steamer Ciudad de Buenos Aires, sank after the crash Tuesday night and at least 94 persons aboard are missing and presumed dead. Argentine authorities barred the departure of the. Mormacsurf pending investigation of charges by the steamer's owners that the United States vessel was to blame. The master of the freighter, Kenneth Sommers of San Francisco, and three crew members were held incommunicado in the investigation.

As hope was vanishing for finding alive any of the 94 missing, there were reports the toll may even go higher. It was feared several small children went down. The passenger list did not mention children under 6. Of the 247 passengers and crewmen listed aboard the river steamer, 153 were rescued. There were no on the Mormacsurf.

The ships collided 78 miles north of Buenos Aires in the Uruguay river. The petition blaming the Mormacsurf was entered by the steamer's owners, Compania Argentina de Navegacion, and its operator, Compania de Navegacion Fluvial Argentina. They asked formation of an arbitrating tribunal to award damages. There was no reply immediately from Moore-McCormack.
