Staff Writer WASHINGTON Their paths have not crossed in the postseason since Tom Landry and Bud Grant stood stoically on the sidelines Nineteen years later the Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings renew a playoff rivalry that was one of the league's fiercest in the 1970s The Philadelphia Eagles' victory in Arizona combined with the Vikings' loss in Green Bay yesterday set up a Cowboys-Vikings playoff game for the first time since the 1977 season They meet at 3 pm Saturday at Texas Stadium The Cowboys are far from building momentum Their 37-10 loss to the Washington Redskins yesterday dropped them to 10-6 the worst Cowboys record since 1990 Still the NFC East champions who rested many of their stars against the Redskins are favored against the Vikings (9-7) who finished in second place in the NFC Central "No one likes to get beat but we did the right thing by resting our players" Cowboys coach Barry Switzer said "I'm just glad Minnesota is coming to our place" The Cowboys have to play a wild-card Star-Telegrami ILL i01 INSON The Redskins' Brian Mitchell leaves Cowboys defenders on the ground on this run Mitchell had 33 yards rushing as the Redskins gained 483 yards ending Dallas' hopes of finishing No I in total defense Cowboys From Page 1 It did not Like the offense that toiled with those players on the field through the first 15 games this one often looked inefficient The only difference between yesterday's game and the previous ones is that this time the defense playing mostly with backups looked as bad as the offense In giving up483 yards in total offense the defense squandered the No 1 ranking it had held for the past six weeks After giving up 259 yards to the Redskins' offense in the first half alone the Cowboys slipped behind the Green Bay Packers and then the Pittsburgh Steelers to finish third in the league Although Switzer treated the loss with humdrum acceptance and many players echoed his feelings that a nice rest was worth an ugly loss linebacker Darin Smith felt a sting after losing the game and the No I ranking "It's very disappointing" Smith said "I wanted us to come out and play well There's definitely concern because we got beat pretty good This is not the way I wanted to go into the playoffs I wanted to go into the playoffs with a victory on the road and playing well on defense We didn't do any of those things today In my opinion that concerns me" Yet guard Nate Newton sounded confident about the Cowboys' possibilities in the upcoming Super Bowl tournament "I feel good" guard Nate Newton said "I like our chances A lot I 1970s "We're taking the long way in and there is no doubt about that" said quarterback Troy Aikman who did not play yesterday "If we win against Minnesota we will be where we've been in previous years" The Cowboys played the Vikings in four playoff games in the 1970s with Dallas winning three of those contests Roger Staubach's 50-yard "Hail Mary" to Drew Pearson gave the Cowboys an improbable victory incomplete pass Irvin caught one pass for 7 yards yesterday of people don't but I love them What's that based on? The fact that we've been there before We know what it takes That may not mean something to a lot of people But that means a lot to me" The Cowboys finished with a 10-6 record their worst regular-season record since 1990 when they finished 7-9 and out of the playoffs The last time the Cowboys brought fewer than 12 victories into the postseason they exited after a divisional playoff loss to the Detroit Lions in 1991 That was also the last year they were forced to play a first-round playoff game Game film from yesterday will be of little help to either the Vikings or the Cowboys "Throw it away" safety Darren Woodson said of the videotape "Throw it out the door" Follow his advice and this is what you are missing: Herschel Walker coming up with a big kickoff return e63 yards) and getting caught from behind short of the end zone (This however is available in film from earlier games) Walker scoring on a 39-yard touchdown run (You'll have to go back a few years to find Walker doing this in a Cowboys uniform and a few weeks to find anyone in a Cowboys uniform actually scoring a touchdown) Running back Sherman Williams showing an occasional burst of speed and rushing for 40 yards and fumbling once (See last year for the fumble video) Cornerbacks Wendell Davis and Charlie Williams each having their coverage problems surrendering big plays that teams fail to even attempt with Delon Sanders and Kevin Smith in the game (If you missed this you are out of luck This was probably a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity) "Right now we can trash everything that happened" wide receiver Michael Irvin said "And believe me there have been seme things that we will love to trash" the club a 23-6 victory in the 1977 NFC Championship Game The winner of each Cowboys-Vikings playoff game has reached the Super Bowl The most recent regular-season Cowboys-Vikings meeting was in the fourth game of 1995 when Emmitt Smith's 31-yard touchdown run in overtime gave the Cowboys a 23- 17 victory Since that game Brad Johnson has replaced Warren Moon as the Vikings quarterback Johnson can throw to two 1000-yard wide receivers: Cris Carter and Jake Reed who are expected to provide the toughest challenge that Cowboys cornerbacks Deion Sanders and Kevin Smith have seen this season Before their 38-10 loss in Green Bay Johnson Carter and Reed had paced the Vikings to a No 9 ranking in total offense ninth passing and 21st rushing The running game has suffered since the midseason injury to Robert Smith Leroy Hoard who is with his third team this year replaced Smith The Vikings' defense was ranked 12th before yesterday 20th against the rush and seventh against the pass 1 Le Breton show tunes might have been running through his head "We did the right thing" Switzer said Some of us are inclined to agree Others will wonder if the Cowboys crossed that gray line between honest effort and simply mailing it in "We did the right thing" Switzer repeated The effort was there sort of But it was the stand-in cast Cowboys Lite that turned this day into a 37-10 debacle The minimum-wage crew that Switzer sent out against the Redskins appeared ill-equipped to handle the somewhat extenuating circumstances The fill-in secondary Davis Charlie Williams and Roger Harper was a large reason Washington quarterback Gus Frerotte threw for 346 yards and why Dallas was assessed 80 yards in penalties The Redskins preyed on the Cowboys' reluctance to take the day seriously They scored early and continued to throw often The customary standing swaying full house at RFK insisted upon playing it straight too The Redskins Band played Hail to the Redskins ad nauseam just like it did when the Redskins used to score touchdowns against Randy White and Charlie Waters And the Redskins themselves jabbered as if they'd actually salvaged something of this miserable collapse of a season "Yeah they didn't have all their players" running back Brian Mitchell said "but I don't think it would have made a difference today We were ready to play today" Whatever Cowboys defensive coordinator Dave Campo put it in better perspective when he said that the coaches don't even intend to look at the game film "Yeah the Redskins sure were excited" guard Nate Newton said "And I'll bet they're going to be even more excited about being home for Christmas "But I'll be at work" Throughout the Cowboys' locker room all seemed to be in concert that Switzer had done well to rest Aikman Smith and most of the regulars One game was not going to make the sputtering Cowboys offense suddenly snap into sync "It's always hard to lose" receiver Michael Irvin offered "I don't care if you're playing a game of marbles "But if we had gone and played everyone and if Emmitt or Troy had gone down we'd be in a tight spot and everybody would go 'Dummies!" And so on this fourth day before Christmas the Cowboys played it like so many Swans A-Sleeping They rested tired muscles They recharged weak batteries And if that meant that they helped ring out old RFK Stadium with gusto the attitude seemed to be well so be it No one cared And frankly we noticed Late in the game as the RFK grandstands rocked and warped one last time Cowboys ears were subjected to a final chorus of "Dallas blanks1" chants I lustling off the field Owner Jones was doused with a liquid optimistically rumored to be beer "I think they were looking for memorabilia" Jones deadpanned his hair still damp "and this one just happened to be my head" What a Iyay to waste a beer I What a way to waste a weekend!
