Boulder County District Attorney Alex Hunter vows to protect the case from the taint of a media frenzy JonBenet's slaying Hunter said won't turn into a media circus as did the trial of OJ Simpson Instead he said he will handle the case the way the "Founding Fathers" would expect him to "The American public has decided that the system doesn't work" said Hunter 60 who is in his 25th year as the county's district attorney "I would like to do something to restore that confidence" 4 I or The Associated Press Reporters listen at a Boulder Colo news conference about the JonBenet Ramsey homicide investigation From Page I have riveted our attention "No 1 is the visual factor" he said "Take a look at this kid She's a beautiful kid" John Ramsey found the body of the Little Miss Colorado in his home on Boulder's posh University Hill eight hours after JonBenet's mother Patsy Ramsey dialed 911 to report that she had found a ransom note The three-page note written with a felt-tip pen demanded $118000 for the safe return of the child The note was written on paper from a legal pad found in the home where investigators reportedly also discovered a rough first draft There was no forced entry The police apparently searched the house after being called to investigate a kidnapping but didn't find JonBeners body behind the "stuck" door of a windowless basement room where the Ramseys had earlier kept Christmas presents But beyond public statements that they believe the killing was a "one-time occurrence" and that the community need not worry about a serial killer on the loose Boulder police have offered little information Last week Boulder Police Chief Tom Koby appeared at a televised roundtable discussion with reporters from five local newspapers even though an estimated 300 reporters from media outlets ranging from the National Enquirer and the Globe to Dateline NBC and The Washington Post were clamoring for information Koby who was an assistant chief of police in Houston before becom Continued City of Light oulder is a city used to atten- tion but usually for reasons of its own making On federal maps' it's listed as a nuclear-free zone in the 1970s the City Council enacted an embargo against South Africa and in the summer police cited a dinner theater for violating the city's law against smoking in public buildings stage The city and the University of Colorado gained notoriety in the late 1960s as a center of student unrest and a haven for free-roaming hippies In the 1970s and 1980s the city's liberal policies were further accented by freewheeling lifestyles and limits on residential growth Today the city of 83000 is a widely known high-tech business incubator where the median income for a family of one is $40800 People here are more apt to police find JonBenet's body Ramsey 53 who was searching the home with a friend eight hours after his wife reported finding the ransom note carried his daughter upstairs before investigators could examine the crime scene police said "I think what people have a hard time understanding is what was going on those early hours" Koby acknowledged "What the Boulder police were originally called to respond to was a kidnapping in progress in that the little girl was gone and so they set up and followed procedure for dealing with that situation "Remember this is a very big house" Koby said "It took us eight days to work through this house" Among the reports police have declined to confirm are that JonBenet was sexually assaulted that her skull was fractured that she was killed in her bedroom and that her father was threatened in the ransom note because of his business associations Ramsey is president of Access Graphics a billion-dollar computer company that is a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corp But beyond the death of official information about the case what has fueled the most speculation are the actions of the Ramseys themselves They have supplied blood hair and handwriting samples but John Ramsey and his wife a former Miss West Virginia remain in seclusion and have not been formally interviewed by police Immediately after the funeral for JonBenet who was buried in Georgia next to half-sister Elizabeth Ramsey killed in a Chicago car accident in 1992 John and Patsy Ramsey were interviewed on CNN Shortly after the interview the husband and wife retained separate criminal defense attorneys and a high-profile private investigator By the time the family including a 9-year-old son Burke returned to Boulder the lawyers had hired media consultant Pat Korten a principal in the Washington crisis management firm Rowan Blewitt Since their return the Ramseys' only public appearance has been a visit to their church where Episcopal Bishop Jerry Winterrowd escorted the couple to their car in front of a media throng "There is nothing wrong with the Ramseys retaining counsel" Koby said "We are still in communication with the Ramseys' attorneys as we have been instructed to do We are following the rules and they are too And that should not he interpreted in any way other than that the rules are being applied to move this thing along" Koby repeatedly has said that he is not interested in trying the case in the court of public opinion "Let me offer a perspective on this issue Prejudging and media hype have never solved a crime" the 28-year police veteran said "Crime solving requires diligent and careful police woi and that is exactly what the Boulder Police Department is committed to doing" But the lack of information has created whodunit speculation of epic proportions The story is even more compelling because JonBenet was Little Miss Colorado in 1995 and as the case unfolds more and more video and still images emerge showing the tow-headed child dolled up as a Vegas showgirl a high-class fashion model and a darling cowgirl crooning "1 wanna be a cowboy's 1-lousing prices have skyrocketed in the past five years homes for less than $200000 are difficult to find But while Boulder has begun to experience some of the problems that accompany growth in an urban area the city has remained relatively safe Between 1990 and 1995 Boulder had 15 homicides 13 are considered solved Officially JonBenet's death was the city's only homicide in 1996 But friends and family of a young mother found dead Dec 4 in a construction pit near her home in a north Boulder housing project say the case of 37-year-old Lorraine Florence Lawrence should have been investigated as a homicide rather than an accidental death and given the same attention the Ramsey case has received The Investigation what happened between family members and police in the initial hours after JonBenet was reported missing remains a huge MAY 7 PM abhor exploitation of women in any form A Boulder grandmother and businesswoman who asked that her name not be used said the attention to JonBeners participation in pageant upon pageant "nauseated me" "It's exploitation and that's where the media has done a real disservice to other children" she said "They hold the pageants up as something It's not It's exploitation It's a kind of socially accepted pornography All of the poses the makeup the costumes are alluding to sex and it's a sickness" But people who knew JonBenet draw a much different portrait of the charming intelligent child who attended a public elementary school in a neighborhood considered middle class by Boulder standards Steve Walker's 6-year-old daughter sings in the Boulder Phil-harmonic's children's choir The Treble Makers a group JonBenet belonged to and performed with at a special holiday show at the historic BouNer Theater He said he can't place the face in the glamour shots of the child he's seen on the news every night "I go to those practices every Monday night and I feel like I know every one of those kids" Walker said "I didn't recognize her" Still there were indications the Ramseys desired even more star quality for their little daughter They approached the holiday show's producer Tony Trumble a dancer and actor from Boulder who trained and performs in New York to work individually with JonBenet The Treble Makers have continued to practice each Monday night although a counselor attended the Jan 6 session to help the children deal with their grief Although Walker said most of the 30 children in The Treble Makers appear to be coping with their friend's death he was "shocked to find out my daughter was in this thing with a rich kid" "I was also surprised that a child as wealthy as that was going to Martin Park Elementary" he said "But that's just Boulder" The Media -ft 7 ince Winkle news director of Boulder radio station KIWI said he has spoken to reporters from as far away as Australia "The national media came to town when people started to speculate that the father was involved" said Winkle who quit his job as a staff writer at the Christian Science Monitor to move to Colorado for its quality of life "Before that it was a heartbreaking local story covered by the local media and a couple of Denver TV stations When the local media started to hint of slight irregularities the notional media started to pick up When the Ramseys hired The Associated Press with her brother Burke Part of the challenge of trying a high-profile case is ensuring that the public is given enough information without tainting the investiga- tion said Hunter the district attorney Already Hunter and his staff have been bombarded with phone calls from the reporters who have camped in Boulder waiting for even the smallest of developments -We were returning them until we ran out of steam" Hunter said noting that the office was receiving up to 40 calls a day "An office this size is not equipped to deal with that" Now a voice mail message refers all questions about the Ramsey case to the Boulder Police Department Leslie Aaholm Boulder director of communications said at least 300 reporters have come to Boulder Her office gets about 75 calls each day from reporters represent- ing Time Newsweek Unsolved-Mysteries and Hard Copy she said "We're dealing with it as best we can almost 24 hours a day" Aaholm said This weekend Boulder Counyy Coroner John Meyer learned that six photos from the crime scene the autopsy will be published in to-morrow's edition of the supermarket tabloid the Globe The photos perhaps the first official information from the unreleased autopsy report were confirmed as authentic after the tabloid faxed copies to Meyer's office An investigation into who leaked the photos to the tabloid is under way Spokesmen for two supermarket chains in the Denver area Safeway and King Soopers said they will not sell the new issue of the Globe On the streets of Boulder the media has become as much a part of the story as the slaying Free-lance writer Diane Freeman tapped to cover both the JonBenet case and the Oklahoma City bombing trial for a national news magazine said she expects many of the media crews to start packing this week "I think a lot of the news media had thought something was going to break this week like an arrest and that's why they've been hanging around" she said For a waitress at the Corner Bar in the Hotel Boulderado where many of the out-of-town reporters and camera crews have been staying the media's departure won't come soon enough She said she is troubled enough by the story of a slain child let alone the jaded speculation whispered by tabloid reporters "It's amazing to eavesdrop on what they're saying and then go home and see it on TV" said the waitress who like many residents who venture a comment on the case didn't want to be identified Hunter said he and his staff of 22 attorneys are confident that they will present a bullet-proof case if and when police turn to the district attorney's office "I want this case so had I can taste it" he said Staff writer Gabrielle Crist con tributed to this
