Oct 6 Defending champions: Inaugural event CART: Season completed Jimmy Vasser is the Championship Auto Racing Teams' 1996 PPG Cup champion with 154 points Driving for TargetChip Ganassi Racing the 30-year-old Californian won four races and four poles effect it's not safe That's something you just don't say about a speedway That's infuriating and that's wrong And yet here they are still trying to get us to sign "It's a moot point Go away" Unsafe at 8 degrees? Despite Gossage's hard-line stance Texas International Raceway's proposed dual-banking concept intrigues Jimmy Vasser CART's newly crowned champion But Vasser 1 and team-owner Chip Ganassi Vir I are holding to i i 1 the CART party I tt line espoused -14 by Dallenbach -11( 1: "Some peo pie feel it's Vasser unsafe for Indycars on the dt-iver's side" Vasser said "Like Chip I haven't seen the track And I'd have to see it before I decided if I wanted to drive on it I understand the difference in banking from 8 degrees to 24 degrees is so severe it could cause a problem" Vasser and Ganassi agreed that the series needs to be at Texas International Raceway which is scheduled to play host to the rival Indy Racing League's inaugural Longhorn 500 on the evening of June 7 The IRL is committed to running on the track's 24-degree banking with its new specification chassis and engine package Texas connection Wally Dallenbach the chief steward for Championship Auto Racing Teams has come up with a design for a temporary retaining wall to accommodate the dual-banking at Texas International Raceway Dallenbach faxed his plan to Eddie Gossage the track's vice president and general manager yesterday morning After a quick review Gossage declared the plan too little too late "They say we have an unsafe speedway It's not wide enough They're not going to run here" Gossage said after scanning two pages of rough sketches "Yet they're sending us diagrams very scientific diagrams I might add "We've told them we're not running a CART race End of story" Dallenbach announced last weekend that he would recommend against CART racing on the 15-mile trioval's 8-degree banked turns until a temporary retaining wall was designed and tested by Indy Car CARTIndyCar wants a barrier that will keep its cars and drivers from sliding up on the track's 24-degree banking and impacting the outside wall Dallenbach's sketches contain notes for "10-foot or 12-foot sections" of barrier supposedly concrete placed end to end and linked together through the corners along the tapered 8-degree banking "I'm OK with them not running here if they don't want to run here" Gossage said "But we told them we're not going to run a CART race Then they go out and chases are so fender-rubbing close that one has to wonder why 4 series officials have again decided to tinker with the rules Two technical changes are scheduled to go into effect begin- ning with qualifying tomorrow at Dover Downs (Del) International Speedway The first allows Chevrolet Monte Carlo teams to lower the minimum ground clear- ance of their front air dams from 4' inches to 375 On Ford Thunderbirds the minimum clear2'' ance goes up to 4 inches from 35''L The changes should translate- into more stability and cornering: speed for the Chevys on "The Monster Mile's" all-concrete degree banked turns The other adjustment calls for all Monte Carlos to run with a rear spoiler 57 inches wide by 6 4 inches high up from 575 inchesv The only spoilt AoPMC'w er allowed on rktgkittt T-Birds will be' V' valk 57 inches by 625 inches high The change 7 should give the Chevys more downforce in Burton the turns but make them a tie slower down the 9-degree straights Ward Burton a member of Roush Racing's three-car Ford stable said the T-Bird and Monte Carlo have at long last reached parity "The cars are equal the engines are equal and it comes down to the teams" said Burton the 1994 Cup rookie of the year who finished third under the lights at Richmond Va on Saturday night "It's all about who's right on a certain day" Updating
