traditional July date at Talladega (Ala) Superspeedway to Oct 12 the return to the Los Angeles market and a Sept 14 race at New Hampshire International Speedway North Carolina Motor Speedway in North Wilkesboro loses its two Winston Cup dates "This possibly is the most anticipated schedule in NASCAR history" NASCAR president Bill France said The schedule consists of 32 championship points races two "special" and one demonstration events The points series opens with the traditional Daytona 500 on Feb 16 in Daytona Beach Fla and concludes at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton Ga on Nov 16 Thirty-one points events comprise this year's schedule Events at Darlington Raceway on March 23 and Bristol (Tenn) Motor Speedway on April 13 bookend the Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway France no additional changes are planned France could not rule out the possibility of additional dates or moving race sites "We never say never to anything" NASCAR spokesman Kevin Triplett said Smith said he will keep trying to obtain a second Winston Cup date for Texas Motor Speedway "We are actively pursuing an additional NASCAR Winston Cup race for our 1997 schedule" said Smith "We've had a long relationship with NASCAR and I know they fully understand the merits of what Texas Motor Speedway has to offer NASCAR wants to be in this important market I will continue to discuss an additional date with NASCAR and consider the door to be open" "We've known about this the schedule for a while One date is what we expected and two is what we hoped for" said Eddie Gossage vice president and general manager of Texas Motor Speedway "We've done something that have the people in Miami and Las Vegas scratching their heads Why don't they have one? This is not a closed issue" The new California Speedway outside Los Angeles is scheduled to be host of its first Winston Cup event June 22 France said the move of Talladega's second date was made because "some people thought it was kind of warm down there" in July Sponsor titles of events network coverage and the Busch Grand National and supertruck schedules will be announced later France said
