It is not the offensive, unbearably violent film some people have usammmmaaammmm branded it, but neither is reviow it a maligned master- piece. Rather, it is a typical.

Brian DePalma film that is to say, a competent remake of somebody else's As for all the controversy about the film's language and violence, it's much ado about little. Sure, it's violent; what would you expect, considering the story? Yet it's no more violent than 100 other films I've seen, and none of the gore is gratuitous. As for its use of that famous four-letter word for sexual intercourse, it becomes so numbing after a while that you barely notice it. Again, what did the critics expect? Do they think Florida drug dealers say "heck" and Unfortunately, this sort of foolish criticism has stained the movie, at least in the short run; it's tempting to view it merely in the context of these complaints instead of taking it on its own terms. Don't fall into that trap.

"Scarface" won't win any prizes for creativity, but it's good, solid, sophisticated film making, and it deserves to be seen. ADMITTED 1. work. 24 1. Virtually all of his recent movies (including "Dressed to Kill" and have been ripoffs of Hitchcock situations and Hitchcock techniques. With this film, the director has gone farther back in film history and gotten more honest with his audience. He admits right up front that this is a remake of Howard Hawks' classic 1932 gangster film with Paul Muni. His avowed purpose: To update that movie and put it into a modern social and political context. Happily, DePalma accomplishes that goal.

He has credibly transferred the story to modern-day South Florida, and has used it to convey his own message co-Hn 'THE HOWLINC (R) whn you buy a car 'BLUE THUNDER' 1.45, "SPACE HUNTER' NOT SHOWN IN 3-D liSO, 7i3S (PO) M3t FrVl channel 18 Wednesday 6 a.m. 3 p.m. Business programming 3 p.m. Local public affairs program 3:30 p.m. Local news 4 8 p.m.

The world will remember him by another name What's really fascinating about the film, however, is how Pacino and DePalma cannily work together to confound our better instincts and make us sympathize with Tony. Yes, he's a cold-blooded killer. But he's also a gutsy guy who is unafraid to try new things or to say exactly what's on his mind. Those are rare qualities in our society and traits most of us admire.
