mmsgm BE wwwdfweoin living Star Telegram I Tuesday September 172002 Parental guidance on this movies Reviewing the big screen for little viewers By JANE IIORWITZ THE WASHINGTON POST Barbershop (10-11 1 hour 40 minutes) Ice Cube heads an immensely likable cast in this little gem of a comedy Set on Chicago's south side in an older mostly African-American neighborhood Barbershop tells a slice-of-hfe story that crosses racial and ethnic boundaries celebrates the goodness and foibles of ordinary folk and thanks to director Tim Story never lets its warm heart go all mushy It will show thoughtful teens a different kind of ui ban comedy with characters developed and attitudes' spoofed through smart bristling dialogue The reflects considerable comic sexual innuendo occasional piofanity and understated violence also played for laughs Cube plays Calvin who runs the bnibershop he inherited from his dad The barbers are a motley crew ranging from an old-timer with outrageous opinions (Cedric the I ntertainer hilarious as usual) to a tough-talking woman (rap star I vc) to a white kid (Tioy Garity) fioin the who get customers until he wins their trust Calvin is behind on his taxes and short on cash In a weak moment he sells the barbershop to a loan shuk (Keith David) then tries to undo the deal after he realizes how important the barbershop is PS for teens: Barbershop owes quite a bit of its style to the movies of Spike Lee His Ciooklyn 13 1994) is about a close-knit family living in a New York inner-city neighborhood in the 1970s Swimfan (PG-13 1 hour 30 minutes) A high-school femme fatale sets her sights on the varsity swimming star and though she manages to seduce him once (in the pool of couisc) he refuses to leave his longtime girlfriend for her and she gels really angry A teen Fatal Attraction (R 1987)? Yep the movie this mmbingly predictable flick appears to be aping Teen audiences may get a charge out of the sophisticated tone of its sexual innuendo but the formulaic story bridge the credibility gap Unusually steamy (for though nongraphic sexual situations make Swimfan a bad choice for preteens Most of the violence is also nongraphic and has more to do with menace but there are struggles a drowning and a bloodied corpse Profanity and scenes of teen-age drinking also earn the rating Jesse Bradford plays Ben a reformed juvenile delinquent and talented swimmer whose little lapse with the new girl Madison (I'rika Christensen) nearly ruins his life Christensen sneers and tosses her curls as she bombards Ben with e-mails torments his girlfriend (Shiri Appleby) then turns violent FALL TV PREMIERE breaks a few but shows promise WE'D Y8 GET HUT? BTWITjl John Ritter's new sitcom MM has a good cast and some funny moments But it may not be as family-friendly as ABC would like you to think You have to get up and do the same hairmakeup routine every day so why not make it a little bit fun? Add color to your morning with these hairbrushes from Herdoos Herdoos also makes equally whimsical hand mirrors Each brush features a sculpted picture of a different girl The available designs include tennis players fairies teachers cheerleaders mermaids and everyday girls Herdoos items can be found at gift shops and boutiques Herdoos hairbrushes and hand mirrors $10 from The Magic Pen 422 Main St Grapevine ABC Bridget (Kaley Cuoco) and her dad (John Ritter) spar over teen issues in 8 Simple Rules By ROBERT FIIILPOT SJAR TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER ABC execs have made a lot of noise recently about their renewed commitment to family programming especially in the early evening But there seems to be some confusion Apparently ABC thinks pro-' refers to any show involving a family not necessarily the content That could explain why the debut episode of the John Ritter sitcom 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter includes jokes about sexual role-playing thongs condoms menstruation and birth control And although the show has some funny moments none of them comes from these jokes not offended by such content but sympathetic to viewers who are and ABC may be misleading them by calling its 7-8 pm CDT "Happy more family-friendly 8 Simple Rules need the risque stuff anyway its funniest moments come from more traditional innocuous situations such as the humiliation a teen-ager feels when a parent drops her off at school Ritter whose natural comedic gifts have only improved in the two decades since Company gives the show a lot of momentum But not the only thing it has going for it Ritter plays Paul Hennessy a 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter 7 tonight WFAA Channel 8 is probably a future Maxim cover girl that mean she be funny and at her best when she goes into one of barely coherent warp-speed spiels As 13-year-old son Rory Martin Spanjers has a sense of mischief that expect from a kid who knows he can get away with more than his sisters The second episode of 8 Simple Rules tones down the off-color content so maybe ABC is trying to be more family-friendly But it also has fewer laughs The cast deserves better writing and so does its audience If the producers can find a happy medium between its bawdier moments and its more successful generation-gap ones we might have a winner here But we have one just yet Robert Philpot (817)390-7872 robpistar-telegram com sports columnist who finds himself spending more time with his three teen-age children when his wife Cate (an underused Katey Sagal) returns to work as a nurse Apparently Cate has been staying at home for a while because Paul still occasionally treats the children as if they were 5 especially 15-year-old Kerry whom he calls (If you were Kerry get that appalled expression on your face too) Amy Davidson no longer a teen) stands out among the young cast as Kerry the smart (and smartmouthed) one prettier than she thinks she is Her delivery and timing are almost as good as Kaley Cuoco (who still is a teen) plays 16-ycar-old Bridget a boy-crazy bubbiehead who likes to show off as much flesh as Dad and the law will allow Although Cuoco FALL TV: back! That 70s Show: Pop singer Jessica Simpson stars in the fifth- season opener in which love-struck Eric (Topher Grace) goes to California to retrieve runaway Donna (Laura Prepon) In other news Hyde (Danny Masterson) has grown a beard but if this show is around much longer these teens are gonna start sporting gray hair 7 pm KDFWChannel 4 I Grounded for Life: This mediocre sitcom has made it to a third season so it must be grounded in something 730 pm KDFWChannel 4 The Real World: Seven strangers in the penthouse suite of a hotel In Las Vegas You just can't get more real than that can you? 9 pm MTV Find Your Beat For The Summer Heat Have more fun build confidence miet new people Learn at your ow speed with one-on-one personal help by our teachers and practice your steps in the group sessions with other people learning just like you Ballroom Latin and Country-Western Dancing THE DANCE CENTERS FORT WORTH 817-332-8880 917 University Fort Worth MID-CITIES 817-285-7001 209 Bedford Rd Bedford Enjoy a heartwarming family film based on the true story of a girl and her horse Refreshments served before the movie FREE ADMISSION FOR MEMBERS!
