6E I wwwdfwcomliving Star-Telegram I Thursday April 4 2002 READING LIST Intriguing story of will make you smile I A witty social his-I tory of the Mona Lisa reveals much about the shaping of popular taste By EDWARD SOZANSKI THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER You have three seconds to name the most famous painting in the world Too much time? Of course talking about Mona Lisa aka La Gioconda Nat with the mystic Next year Leonardo da Vin- masterpiece will be 500 years old The Louvre which has owned it since the 18th century plans to install it in its own room the only one of the 6000 paintings to be so honored But then Mona Lisa needs her own space because she attracts so many visitors though they see her very well enclosed as she is in a box behind two layers of bulletproof glass Mona Lisa is one of the few masterpieces to become a pop-culture icon In Becoming Mona Lisa British historian Donald Sassoon explains step by step how this happened And what a fascinating story it is a mix of art history sociology psychology even crime Am Mk Mna SCHEPISI HAS SUCCEEDED EYONDALt EXPECTATION Mona Lisa Sassoon history $30 her an irresistible femme fatale Mona Lisa was poised for takeoff And then she was kidnapped In August 1911 Vincenzo Peruggia an Italian workman in the Louvre lifted Mona Lisa off her hook put her under his coat and took her home The painting remained in his Paris apartment until December 1912 when he tried to sell it to a dealer in Florence The dealer called the police and Mona was repatriated Press coverage both of the theft and the recovery pushed Mona Lisa into the celebrity stratosphere And there her celebrity began to feed on itself story reveals its denouement Mona Lisa as a global icon long before one reaches the end of the book What it makes clear is that celebrity generates its own multiplier effect something the other Madonna obviously learned years ago known as which gives Mona Lisa her enigmatic smile When da Vinci died the painting passed to his royal patron Francis I Entering the French royal collection and eventually the Louvre proved a major factor in its ennoblement The 19th-century cult of da Vinci pushed the portrait up another notch He came to be regarded as a universal genius an idea Sassoon debunks by pointing out that while the fabled drawings demonstrate da intellectual curiosity nothing practical ever resulted from his musings People also began to notice mysterious smile because of which Sassoon writes many began to consider reporting The apotheosis evolved from a series of events over centuries Most had little to do with aesthetic- qualities Indeed Mona Lisa can be understood as a case study in how a person or thing achieves immense popular acclaim improbable story begins with the 30-by-21-inch painting itself which is both ordinary and remarkable ordinary because the sitter Lisa Gherardini was basically a homemaker married to Francesco de Giocondo a wealthy Florentine merchant remarkable because of its unusually detailed landscape background the prominence of hands and da technique for creating shadow Becoming by Donald Cultural Harcourt icrsssrrsi STARTS TOMORROW EXCLUSIVE ENGAGEMENT New! A lot of that I left to Bob Hammel We put about 80 hours of things on tape and had to choose which to use I told him in the beginning I wanted to share what I do and why There had to be a lot about actual coaching and also I knew a lot of going over some things that happened For example I will never for as long as I live ever understand how anyone can get upset by my telling an 18- or 19-year-old student to call me or instead of just by my last name Knight was fired by Indiana for this confrontation which university officials ruled violated his agreement not to engage in behavior The student claimed Knight shouted profanity at him How can that be an issue for anybody? And in all the years I coached a chair thrown once and still shown over and over and over Your critics will say you apologize for anything in the book I know people may disagree with me This is my side of it all Early reviews of Knight agree this one of those ubiquitous superficial sports pseudo-autobiographies You discuss your life and career in depth Bob and I decided that if we were going to do it we wanted it to be a good book one that was worth reading We met in New York with six or seven publishers Some of them wanted me to write it with somebody other than Bob Hammel and I do that never had a closer friend and jl wanted him to get something from the relationship why I hate that book John Fein-stein did A Season on the Brink I told him upfront it was OK if it was a book about the Indiana basketball team but any book about me was going to be written by Bob Hammel They made a movie of book If well be enjoyed the UNITED ARTISTS BOWEN 1-20 ft Bowen 817-468-0833 UNITED ARTISTS LAS VEGAS TRAIL I-30 Las Vegas Trad 817-246-1552 AMC HULEN Hulen St of Malt 817-346-4994 UNITED ARTISTS EASTCHASE MKT 1-30 East chase Pkwy 817-795-0584 UNITED ARTISTS FOSSIL CREEK 11 1-35 Western Center Btvd 817-847-9591 UNrTED ARTISTS BEDFORD 10 Hwy 183 Murphy Ex 354-4488 CHECK 'THEATRE DWECTORY OR CALL FOR SHOWTIMES ANO SOtMD womunoN Exclusive Engagement Starts Tomorrow! If at Texas Tech for a while if things go well when I wind up my career it might be good to write another one and say is the end of the really enjoyed my time at Tech so far so down the line a second book might work And what about the people who continue to criticize your actions?
