1ST SECTION, ZONE: SPORTS, FINAL 22:25:33 The News Observer Wednesday, September 3, 20SPORTS College of Charleston hires Grant; Lutz was a candidate for job Clemson assistant Earl Grant has been named the College of Charleston basketball coach, ending a nearly month-long search since the firing of Doug Wojcik. College of Charleston President Glenn McConnell and athletics director Joe Hull an- nounced the hiring Tuesday. Wojcik was fired after his second year with the Cougars following an investigation into allegations that he verbally abused players, assistant coaches and staffers in the athletic department. Grant spent the past four seasons on Clem- staff. Before that, he served six years as an assistant for Gregg Marshall at Winthrop and Wichita State.

Grant, 37, a native of North Charleston, came out on top in a search that included former Charlotte coach and current N.C. State assistant Bobby Lutz, Wofford coach Mike Young, and one of the most popular players in former NBA standout Anthony Johnson. mMOTORSPORTS team folds: Mooresville-based Turn- er Scott Motorsports shut down the Truck Series team driven by Ron Hornaday a move that forced the layoff of 18 employees. Co-owners Harry Scott and Steve Turner are at odds over the management of the race team, and each has filed legal action against the other. BASKETBALL Unbeaten U.S.

rolls: Anthony Davis had 21 points and nine rebounds, Kenneth Faried add- ed 15 and 11 and the U.S. remained unbeaten at the Basketball World Cup by beating winless New Zealand 98-71 in Bilbao, Spain. BJ Antho- ny scored 11 points for New Zealand, which fell to 0-3. NEWS SERVICES aBriefs Concordia-Selma at Bluff, 7 UT-Martin at Cent. Arkansas, 7 Incarnate Word at Stephen F.

No. 20-seed Monfils pound- ed his chest and extended his arms after seventh-seeded Di- mitrov double-faulted on match point. Monfils made two major quarterfinals in a season for the first time in his career. He also advanced that far at the French Open. Dimitrov broke through to his first Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon but fol- low that up with another deep run.

In an entertaining match, both players made unbelievable gets, including shot in the final game that he nearly curled around the net. Dimi- trov got it back to win the point, but the match came down to break points: Monfils converted three of four, Dimi- trov just one of seven. Monfils moves on to play sec- ond-seeded Roger Federer, a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 winner against No. 17 seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in a night match. Earlier, unseeded Peng Shuai of China beat 17-year-old Belin- da Bencic 6-2, 6-1 to reach her first semifinal in 37 Grand Slam appearances.

Only five women have partic- ipated in more major tourna- ments before getting to a final four, and the relief brought Peng, 28, to the brink of tears. She said during her on-court interview that she at times thought about quitting the sport, but coach, my par- ents, they always tell me to try to keep going and never ever, give Peng, ranked 39th, has not yet lost a set in the tournament. She stayed consistent against Bencic, hitting 24 winners and committing only seven un- forced errors. Her teenage op- ponent, meanwhile, appeared to become unglued in the mug- gy 91-degree heat. Bencic, ranked 58th, was the youngest quarterfinalist at Flushing Meadows since her mentor, Martina Hingis, won the title at 16 in 1997.

Bencic is coached by mother, Melanie Molitor, and was is- sued a code violation for receiv- ing help from her box while down 2-0 in the second set. 6-2, 2-0 and giving me a code Bencic yelled at the umpire. She went on to lose that game. Tenth-seeded Caroline Woz- niacki, who eliminated five- time major champion Maria Sharapova in the fourth round, defeated 13th-seeded rani 6-0, 6-1 in a night ma another semifinal spot No. 1 Serena William will face 11th-seeded Fla netta in another quar Wednesday, lost in the quarterfinals with sister Serena had her right ankle taped during a medical timeout and later double-faulted last two points in a 7-6 (5), 6-4 loss to the fourth-seeded duo of Ekaterina Makar Elena Vesnina.
