surgery and in stable condi- tion Moody 41 had been back I 1 on the air since 1 July 10 after '''''cl sr nearly three months during which time he '4 was recuperating from a Moody near-fatal stomach ailment that also resulted in severe bleeding Moody's stomach problems date back to 1991 and are apparently not related to the cancer he had and beat nearly 10 years ago WFAA -165 KXAS 134 KM -50 KDRV used to set advertising rates There is a July sweeps period but it is generally ignored because overall viewership drops as much as 20 percent during the summer The July sweeps weren't ignored this year though: With the Fox Network moving from KDARChannel 33 to KOFWChannel 4 and CBS moving from Channel 4 to KTVTChannel 11 there is unparalleled local interest in the July sweeps which ended Wednesday night Because the network affiliation changeover occurred July 1 the ratings are a very preliminary barometer of how well the change is working Or isn't working As usual WFAAChannel 8 the ABC affiliate won in the ratings at 5 6 and 10 pm but has apparently given up a substantial chunk of viewers during all three newscasts compared with July 1994 At 6 and 10 pm Channel 8 has likely lost some of the audience to Channel 11's new newscasts but Channel 8's rat network programming Ratings for Channel 11's Iwo evening newscasts are well behind the other three stations but that's to be expected since neither have had time to build an audience Channel 11's prime-time ratings have been respectable but ratings drop an average of 19 percent from the 9 pm CBS show to the 10 pm Channel 11 newscast The big winner in the July sweeps appears to be NBC affiliate KXASChannel 5 which held its own at 6 pm and grew substantially at 5 and 10 pm Before the switch Channels 4 and 5 have generally been fighting a right battle for second and Channel 5 has emerged as the clear winner with the numbers narrowing between Channel 5 and perennial leader Channel 8 "We knew it would be good" said Lee Spieckerman promo- tions director for Channel 5 "but this was beyond our expectations" For the 10 pm newscast "This is the closest IOCAS has been to WFAA in recent history We're proud of the momentum we've generated here and were going to keep it going" For everyone else there's always the November sweeps A SLY MOVE Sylvester Stallone one of the actors behind the Planet Hollywood restaurant chain instead of Fox's two or three hours per night newscast ratings have suffered Ratings for the 10 pm newscast are down 35 percent from July 1994 and 6 pm newscast ratings are down 23 percent "We're not really disappointed" said David Goldberg news director at Channel 4 "We knew we'd drop some in the ratings but we're ahead of where we thought we would be" Channel 4's 10 pm newscast is crippled by
