WirUrn Visit. Tiie years deal gently with S.r W.lliam C. Van Home. He is as young, as fresh and active as he was 11 years ago when he paid his tirst trip to ih.s Province and tfavers 1 tiie site upon which the city of Vancouver now st. til ls, then a dense forest, th" 111: iericrowth bt ing an extraordinary one.

lice that period he lias paid many visits to the coast and according to the statement made to a World representative ttiis morning he observes on every side the most gratifying progress. At present it is nol the intention of the company to incur any liabilities that can possiibly be avoided. Outside the works already in progress, and the iM'rmanent improvements being made in tne road bed, the changing of wooden culverts and trestles to stone anil steel structures nothing w.l) be done until there is a change in the money market and tne company's stock at quotations which will enable it to be in a position, financially, to begin work such as terminal buildings in tnis city, and other necessary undertakings. With all improvement in the times and business generally the earnings of the Canadian Paeitic were expanding and the quotations for its stock gradually increasing. These were now quoted at tij and the probabilities were that a sliding up will continue for some time.

The business outiook everywhere was satisfactory and business as well as railway men were hopeful of the future. So far as British Columbia was concerned he was especially pleased with 1 lie outlook for the mining, lumbering and agricultural interests. Lumber was still depressed, but the silver lining of belter days was discernable. His company was running its business in the most economical manner consistent with efflcitnl service. Tnis was necessary, for tiie income did not warrant any other policy.

Vancouver, he was pleased to observe, was still on the highway to greatness. The progress made was substantial, indicating the faith its citizens have in the place. Every year revealed to him the fact that ancouverites were loyal to their city and patriotic to their country. As yet nothing definite had been decided regarding a fast Atlantic service. So far as freight rates were concerned the company was doing its best to meet the wishes of shippers in the interior.

Its interests and those of the people In this Province were Identical and everything possible was being done to meet their requirements. It was more expensive to operate a line of railway here than In the east, where there was a larger population and many times more freight offering. Every case considered to be unfair or excessive as to charges made, upon being properly placed before the management, or those charged with looking after the same, would receive attention. Already a considerable reduction had been made in the rates from all okanagan points Into the Kootenay country, and shippers there, as well as consumers, were now well pleased. Sir William and party left to day for Victoria.

Brock's house is one of the largest In the Queen City, and the business transacted by It is an enormous one. LOST HIS BOLL.

Only one unfortunate individual lined up at the Cadi's levee this morning. He was an oid man, and his tattered clothes and locks of grey seemed to have known a better day. His face was a picture. It looked like a rugged sea coast done by an Impressionist iln three cjlois, red, black und blue. It had evidently been pounded by a muscular, if not a master hand.

'File old man had been picked up by the iwlice by the side of a street in a stare of complete Incapacity. His story was that he had come down from the north coast with the idea of going to the city hospital to be treated for a kidney trouble. He did not start direct for the hospital when he got olT the Comox and when he did start he says he was set on by two men who maltreated him and took Hum him $40 all he had in the world, lie to.d the magistrate that this was all he had, font when he went downstairs having been dlsmissed he discovered that 10 cents had been found on h.m anil he went back and apologized for deceiving him.
