FRANK AND ERNEST by Bob Thoves QUESTION: What is a terrapin? * * * ANSWER: A terrapin is a turtle, a member of the reptile family of cold-blooded animals that thrive in a mild climate. It is characterized by a protective shell and a sharp horny bill instead of teeth. It is found on land and in the sea and varies in sixe from 3 inches to 10 to 12 teet long. All turtles lay eggs and may live longer than any other animals, perhaps up to 150 years. They eat animals arid plants. ^ .,..-., Terrapin is a freshwater turtle found in tide water streams. The term terrapin is loosely applied to several American fresh water turtles considered as highly valuable food. There are about 20 popular species of terrapin in the United States. The best known is the Diamond Back Terrapin, about 7 to 8 inches long, gray in color with Black markings, found in salt marshes from New York to Texas. It feeds on crabs, snails and other water animals, also green plants. The flesh of the Diamond Back is in high favor and is a delicacy. It is becoming rare and is protected by law in Maryland and North Carolina. It is raised on turtle farms for the seafood market. 6-3 Wenise Edenhofer ofWausau.
