The tailoring trade seems to be de moralized. In order to sell cheap, common goods and trimmings must be bought, and inferior workmen employed, to undersell one's neighbor. Consequently ihe cheap clothing that is quoted by tailors in this city Is Inferior to some of the ready made clothing that one can buy In any of the ready made clothing houses. Realizing the extremely dull times, we had for the last two years, I have reduced my former prices (which in fact were not excessive, for the quality or goods, trimmings and workman ship) TO A LIVING FIGURE. HcLEOD COOTE. i Pacific Railway Company. Mr. Shaugh nessy is on a tour of inspection and ob servatlon. He is accompanied by Chief Engineer Peterson.

He has Just made a trip through the Kootenay country. On It he was accompanied by Messrs. Abbott, Marpofe, Camble, and Peterson. The party visited Rossland, Ilobson, Nelson, Pilot Bay, the Blue Bell mines Kaslo, Three Forks, the Slocan Star mine, and Capt. Moore's concentrating plant at the Idaho mine.

Mr. Shaughnessy said this afternoon that he was very much impressed with what he had seen In the mining district. That there is lots of wealth to be taken out is undoubted. One thing that the C. P.

will do as soon as practicable is to build a line with a view to saving the Trail creek trade for Canada. At present everything used in that district, even the window sashes for the business houses that are now being rushed up by the dozen, come from Spokane. There should be a smelter in that country. The C. 1'.

could not build one but some ot the shareholders in the company who give attention to mining matters might do so. A tram line from Rossland to Trail Creek was contemplated but he thought that the projectors would hold it in abeyance until they saw what tlit C. P. was going to do. Matters are quiet on the Nakusp Slocan at present, the bad roads preventing the hauling or ore to the railway.

Work is being pushed on the Kaslo and Slocan and the grading is well advanced. The matter of the Vancouver terminal buildings must lay over for the present, said Mr. Saugh nessy. The management would like to see the work completed personally he much disliked to see the foundations standing with nothing on them but it was after all a trimming and had to stand aside for more Important work. He was much struck by the prospects for a phenomenal crop In Manitoba and the Northwest Territories.

All kinds of grain looked well when he passed through that district. C. R. Hosmer, manager of the C. P.

R. telegraph system, John Maekav. the "Bonanza King." and E. J. Matthews, of Philadelphia, are expected to arrive to morrow or next day.

They are on their way to Alaska. Messrs. Shauehnessv and Peterson return to Montreal. GOLD. MOKE GOLD.

A despatch from New Denver says: There is no longer a doubt 'hat the new mining district at the foot of Slocan lake deserves to take rank vitti nnv 0: in tainous camps which hiu caused sucn a seiies of excitements in Kootenay during the last four years 1 lie latest (lis reveries have placed it, in tho estimation cf eld mining men, on a par wita the Sandon region, where the slocan ttar and the Noble Five wero found. Webb, of Spokane, has made a big strike on the Fisher Maiden. The claim shows three veins and has yieldedassays as high as mo. The Wakefield mine, owned by Fur burn and W. H. Smith, shows five feet of solid galena.

Over 250 tons of ore are now exposed to view. The Alpha has over 300 tons of ore on the wharf ready for shipment. All this country neeos 10 make one of the best mining districts in Ttriilsh Columbia is capital. The owners are too poor to develop but are holding on and waiting, knowing the needed money will come in due time. AGAINST SUNDAY EXCURSIONS.

The intermediate lacrosse match at the Point on Saturday afternoon was witnessed by a fair crowd of spectators, who enjoyed a good game, though towards the cioe the N'maimo's showed want of training and fell to pieces.

Vancouver had the best of It throughout, some very creditable lacrosse being put up occasionally by the teams. Itefore the match opened the visitors lodged a protest aeainst one of the home players.
