Everybody is doing everything possible to help, but we have seemingly reached an impasse. "Her mother couldn't sit by any longer.

She had to fly out last night to try and pick up the trail. "We just don't understand it." The father said a letter and a cable from Tokyo only added to the mystery. In the letter the girl apolo gized for buying airline tickets on her mother's credit card. She promised to pay back the mon ey after working a year in an orphanage. Then came the cable telling the parents not to worry and that their daughter was coming home.

The cable was signed "Mary." Still more mystery. In her room the parents found 1. a note in which the girl said she planned to take a 2. the written telephone number for the Catholic Sisters of Social Service and 3. the scribbled name "Caulfield." "We've learned that Genevieve Caulfield is a well-known humanitarian in the Far East who helped build a school for the blind in Thailand," said Dr.

Wilson. "She worked through the Catholic Sisters of Social Service here and had recently visited here." It was assumed that Mary, inspired by the work of the 77-year-old aunt of actress Joan Caulfield, had gone to Bangkok to work in the school. "But no one at the school had seen or heard of Mary. Miss Caulfield is en route to Saigon and I couldn't contact her. I only wish Mary had gone to the school to work," the father added.

He said his daughter was popular with boys but had no steady boy friend. Police checked 17 of her close friends at nearby Birmingham High School but found no trace of wanderlust. A travel agency reported that the girl made inquiries last May about flying to Cabodia. Clues include a duplicate from the credit card purchase of tickets to Bangkok and a passport record showing Mary used her older sister's birth certificate to get a passport. The girl quietly packed one piece of luggage in the basement of her home, then said she would not be home after school.

At 12:30 a.m. Nov. 20, the parents called the girl friend and learned that Mary didn't visit the chum and, in fact, had not been at school the previous day. GOP Women Have Party On Thursday Hazleton Council of Republican Women will have a Christmas dinner party Thursday at 6 p.m. at the YMCA-YWCA.

One $64 check of hers is home uncashed. All she has is her mother's American Express credit card. Maybe she's using that to cash checks, but we ha ven't seen any yet "I have been in touch with Direct Line ABIGAIL VAN BUREN from one written by the wife of a serviceman in financial difficulty. I wish you would have told her to give the Commanding Officer a chance to act first. L.

D. MARLOWE, JR. (COL.) C. INFANTRY CENTER FORT BENNING, GA. DEAR ABBY: About that wo man who griped because the gov ernment no longer sent allotment checks to wives of men in the service, but put them on their "honor" to send support money home: She said that unfortunately some men didn't have much honor, and she included her husband.

I would like to joint out that in cases where the allotment check auto matically went to the wife, plenty of G.I.'s got a dirty deal, and cut ting it out was one of the best things that ever happened to servicemen. Women used to marry a G.I. just to get her hands on his allotment check regularly, and she'd refuse to even go to where he was stationed. Now she has to either live with the guy or take it up with the civil courts. Believe me it's better this way.

IN THE SERVICE DEAR ABBY: I read that letter from "SKIP MY NAME" in which she stated that servicemen are "on their honor" to support their families since the old allotment system has been discontinued? Is she talking about AMERICAN servicemen Abby? She must be nuts or something. My husband has been in the Infantry of the U.S.A. for almost a year now. I started getting an allotment right from the beginnig and I still get it. Please explain this.

BAFFLED IN VIRGINIA DEAR BAFFLED: There are "grades" (rank) in the military. Men in the higher grades who have reached a certain rank are not required to submit allotments for their dependents. They are "on their honor'" to support their families, and it's the rare bird who doesn't meet this responsibility. Allotment checks are sent to dependents of servicemen in the "lower" grades, however. DEAR ABBY: Holy smokes! Of all the advice to give a woman who's having trouble getting support money from her soldier hus-hand.

Write to your Congressman, you tell her! Congressmen have enough to do without handling complaints about the servicemen. Taxpayers could save themselves a load of dough if you would educate them on WHERE to send their complaints instead of just piling everything on their Congressmen. All that stuff has to be sorted and sifted and then rechan-neled to the proper places. Very truly yours, TAX PAYER DEAR ABBY: Re that letter from "SKIP MY The U.S. Army does not condone irresponsibility on the part of its members, and considers support of dependents a serious responsibility.

Failure on the part of a service member to meet his obligations tends to cast discredit upon the military service, and is grounds for disciplinary action and even elimination from the service as undesirable. Sitting by two telephones at the family home in the Los Angeles suburb of Encino is Dr. George Wilson, baffled by his The By DEAR ABBY: "Skip my name" advised the wives of servicemen who were "on their honor" to send support money home but failed to do so, to write to the Adjutant General's office, and send copies to tier husband's Commanding Offi cer, chaplain, her husband and heaven knows who else. And you tow her she could accomplish the same results with only one letter to her Congressman! Abby, no matter to whom this woman writes her letter will eventually end up on the desk of her husband's Com manding Officer. I am the CO. for over 4,000 troops, and I assure you, I would not react any faster to a letter from the Adjutant General's office, or from a Congressman, than Boy Friend And Luci Go to Church FREDERICKSBURG, Tex (AP) Luci Johnson and her boy friend, Pat Nugent, attend ed church services together Sunday morning for possibly the last time for the next several weeks.

Presidential aide Jack Valenti drove the couple from the LBJ Ranch 15 miles west to St. Mary's Catholic church, where they arrived 10 minutes after the 10 a.m. services had begun Nugent turned away when asked by a reporter if he is entering the armed servces Monday. He reportedly will be inducted into the Air Force on Monday, at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, 70 miles southeast of the President's ranch. News photographers, who had not been at the church when the three arrived, apparently surprised them after the service and Nugent and Miss Johnson stayed out of view until Valenti could bring the car into a driveway beside the church.

When Valenti discovered the driveway exit was blocked at one end, Nugent jumped from the car and began moving churchgoers' autos blocking the Way. Valenti, with Luci apparently enjoying the attempt to dodge photographers, circled the block and picked up Nugent and they returned to the ranch. The President's daughter and Nugent have been dating since June and they reportedly asked the Johnsons recently for consent to marriage. The President is said to have urged them to wait until Luci finishes her instructions at a Washington school of nursing. "Nugent, 22, is from Wauke-gan, 111., and has worked in a minor government job in Washington since graduating in June from Marquette Uiversity.
