We have had the pleasure of a call from Mr. John C. Squier, the regular traveling agent of the Co-lumbia iRegister. The Register is a lively, well managaged newspaper and we are glad to learn that.it is in a flourishing condition. The trial of Senator John R.

Cochran, of Anderson, for killing a son of Sheriff Dent, of Richland, is now going on in Columbia. The shooting took place in Fines saloon, and created considerable excitement in Columbia at the time of its occurreuce. A NEW TORE--We invite special attention to the advertisement of Master James E. Cathcart, published in another column. This young gentleman has launched early up on the Eea of merchandise, and he deserves constant encour agement.

We bespeak for him a liberal patronage from the people of the town and county. overnior Hamplton haa commis.sioned the officers of the rifle clubs in Columbia, as well as those of the artillery and sabre clubs. These organizations have been accepted as part of the State militia. The Washington Artillery and Palmetto Guards of Charleston have been likewise received. We would take this occasion to suggest that the officers of the Fairiield Sabre Club apply to Governor Hamnpton for cornmissions, and also to have their club inustered in as part of thei militia, The Union-Herald says, "The northern States, as usual, voted for their choice withlout fuss, As a matter of course all the trouble comes from the South." So it does, but only from States where the special friends of the (T.Jf., the returning boards, manipulate the returns so as to defeat the will of the people.

We venture the asser.tion, however, that this trouble will not come from the South any more, At the next Presidential election honest men will constitute the returning boards, and sneh creatures as 3. Madison Wells will be in obscurity. We have seen a letter to a gentle man in towvn from a friend of his in Boston, and give here'with an extract as evincing the feelinga oft an honest New Egad er, the writer being a Republican I feel what you said about Hampton's election) thing from your stato since that tiio with great interest, hoping to learn of his final olcetion, sinco he was without doubt the hearty choice of your best people. We wish so much that these election questions might be settled harmoniously and satisfactorily to all, so that our whole people could go to work again with a will. All with whom I moot would much prefer Tilden's election, if a near approach to this state of fool ing could bo reached.

Whichever way it is settled, so there is general satifaction, our common people will say amen, and be perfectly content. Altogether I am quite sure that the majority of the Republicans of New England would be glad to know of Tilden's election'to-morrow morning. I feel this to be a fact, and I think it a hopeful sign." TUE Till-WEEKLY tri-weekly edition of THE NEws AND HERALD is now sent to all persons whose names are on the books of the old Tri- Weekly News. Should any of these desire their names transferred to the books of the weekly edition, and if any of those now receiving the latter wish to change for the tri-weekly, they will please notify us at once. Those in arrears for subscriptions must settle -at once, or expect their papers to be stopped forthwith.

Romance at Society in our sister town of Ridgeway has been in a flutter of excitement for some weeks in anticipation of one of those spectacles with which the love god sometimes favors the world-a double mar. riage ceremony. Not that there is anything peculiarly novel in this blending of two souls into one, for marrying and giving in marriaga have been the order of the day since Adam first found himself ribless in Paradise. Nothing is more common than that Cupid should scatter his darts at random among quivering hearts; indeed at Ridgeway du.r ing the past winter he found a number of victims. 'But when he uses a double-barrelled bow, so to speak, and wakes four hearts happy simultaneously, it is a spectacle worthy to be witnessed.

A week or so since cards were issued inviting the recipients to witness the nuptials of Mr. James A. Kennedy and Miss Minnie Coleman, and Mr. A. L.

Porter and Miss Mamie Cason, which were to be celebrated at the Methodist church on Thursday the 15th at half-past nine o'clock, a. in. Quite a large concourse was expected but to the intense disappointment of all and more espeendlly the feminine portion of the towns-peop)le, Thursday morning dawned dark and dismal, while the rain and ice pernitted but a few ladies to attend. The sterner sex were, however, wvell represented. At ten o'clock the brides and grooms elect repaired to the in carriages, and separated at the door, one couple enterinmg through each aisle.

The brides were equally charming, and thme grooms correspondingly happy. The Rev. Mr. Munnerlyn, in the absence of the Rev. A.

K. Durham of the Baptist church, performed the ceremony. The happy couples having been pronounced tcoo, the ceremony was ended and thle course dispersed. Mr. Kennedy and his bride left upon the nmidday train for a tour to Charleston and other points, while 1Mr.

Porter entortained his friends withl a collation and festivities at honme. Long life and happiness to the young couples. NOTWmi TO parties indebted to' IE. J. McCARLEY, Rt.
