She passed away with her family by her side, Thursday, June 19, 2014, in Sacramento, Ca. at the age of 78. The first 22 years of life were spent living the simple country life.

It was when she moved to the big City of Athens, Greece where she met Henry, the love of her life in 1957. It was love at first glance for the Air Force man and they married in 1958. A year later their first daughter Teri was born and it was off to the United States where they would live the military life, and bring into the world their second daughter April. Athina and family would spend their years experiencing different parts of the country from Florida to California. Eventually the girls grew up and Athina and Henry would decide that Reno, NV would be their home for a time and then it would be Northern California, where she could be near her beloved family.

Although she had lived the simple life, Athina was no simple woman. Wife, mother, sister, aunt, a grandmother Our Yiayia. She was our inspiration, hero, teacher and friend. Everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her was shown grace, generosity, acceptance, humor and love. She was the strongest, most giving woman, that we have ever known.

We will cherish her and all of our special moments together forever and appreciate her love for us more than she will ever know. Of all of her boundless gardening to sewing, to favorite has been her cooking! She would ask you The tyropita, the dolmathakia the lamb (oh the lamb), potatoes, Greek garlic meatballs with her amazing rice pilaf, the homemade olives, avgolemono, pastitsio, moussaka and not forget, her famous baklava! Family get-togethers and special church functions, including the Greek Festival at St. Katherine, will never be the same without her magic touch. NOTHING WILL BE THE SAME WITHOUT HER HERE WITH US. In her earlier years as a member of the church, Athina was the Vice President of The Philoptochos at St.

Katherine Greek Orthodox Church in Elk Grove Ca. She loved God and her church. Her dedication to the church, faith in her religion and her love for God will assure her a place where there is no pain or sorrow. Athina is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Henry Holland, her sisters Anastasia (Joe) DeRosa, Jiannoula (Sterio, deceased) her brother John Lambropoulos, her 2 daughters, Teri (Ed) Hill, April Holland (Tom Gettings), her grandchildren Melissa Hall, Nichol Sutherland, Jennifer Hall, Kristena Champlin, Elizabeth Hutchison, Ashley Champlin and her precious great-granddaughter Amaya Marie Frederick, nieces Anne (Rich) Brown, Maryna Lambropoulos, nephews David DeRosa and Anthony Lambropoulos, great-nieces Lisa, Tabitha (Casey), Zoey, Amanda, Molly and Allysann. PEIRCE, Barbara Jane Barbara Jane Peirce, resident of Pleasanton, California, recently yielded to her wanderlust nature on June 7, 2014, and departed on one last journey to join her parents, Charles and Evelyn Gaffney, her brother Jim Gaffney, and her sister Caroline Lake, in a place of peace and comfort. journey to California began in Hamden, Connecticut where she was born at home crowing like a rooster, on February 24, 1928, the youngest child of three.

Determined to be the first one in her family to go to college, Barbara pursued that dream by attaining her Nursing Degree from the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing, followed by a degree from Columbia University in New York City, and eventually, her degree from the University of California at San Francisco. restless feet began to show during and aftera post-college trip to Europe when she migrated to California in 1955, where she met her husband, Thomas E. Peirce, (and later divorced), raising five children, Karen Peirce, Mary Peirce Danner, Thomas S. Peirce, Cynthia (Peirce) Vazquez, and Jay Peirce. Between them she found herself bestowing her love and lessons on six grandchildren, Jordan, Taylor, Felix, Luz Zulema, Olivia and Roland.

Calling the beautiful city of San Francisco home, Barbara raised her five children single-handedly during the turbulent and She even managed to escort them every Sunday plus any number of friends in her VW bus the damn to the park or the beach. During this time she simultaneously worked as a nurse and attained her degree at UCSF, after which she taught Nursing at the University of San Francisco. fierce independence and constant encouragement influenced her children, all of whom have achieved professional status in non-profit industry, high-tech, education, and corporate retail roles. Barbara chose to follow her yen for new climes, and moved away from the cool SF fog to the warm sunshine on the sleepy outskirts of Santa Rosa where she designed her own ranch-style home. After again teaching nursing at Sonoma State University, happy feet (her tap-dancing skills not withstanding) began to beckon and she found herself in the bucolic Sierra she eventually spent 20 years at her River Pines home, perched on the south fork of the Cosumnes River and continued her nursing profession into her at Sutter Hospital in Jackson, CA.

Her children anchored Barbara in more ways than one and her life experiences also demonstrated her willingness to make LIFE a challenging adventure! When not hosting her family and friends at her homes in Sonoma or Amador counties, Barbara was traveling or reflecting on her journeys to Bermuda, Russia, Mexico, Hawaii, Spain, Morocco, the Bahamas, Alaska, China, and the British Isles. Having seen much of the world, Barbara relocated to the Bay Area in 2004 to be closer to her children, grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews, who visited her at the Parkview Home until the day she left on her final adventure, and who continue to carry on her legacy of compassion, selflessness and living life to its fullest.
