"Now it's not like that anymore It's strictly business It's wiry professional" NOT inches shorter than Dent "I draw confidence from guys like Michael Chang a few years ago and now Andre Agassi He's won Grand Slams on all surfaces That's the kind of guy I look to" Agassi made good on Hewitt's compliment Along with Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport in the women's draw and Patrick Rafter and Yevgeny Kafelnikov on the men's side Agassi joined Hewitt to advance to Wimbledon's third round Until his minibreakout performance Thursday most of Dent's identity has been linked to his father Although he grew up in America he is the son of Australian tennis star Phil Dent He never learned to play it safe "It's not my style" said Dent whose serve is the fastest ever recorded at Wimbledon I just don't play well that way I actually play less consistently doing that You know I just recently got into the mode of being aggressive again So it's really been good" From Wire Reports TMS From Page 1D based asphalt surface This marks the second complete repaving at TMS the first coming after the Winston Cup race in April 1998 when Bill France Jr then NASCAR president and now its chairman told TMS management that a number of drivers had complained about the surface France gave TMS a deadline of June 1998 before the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series to repair damage caused by water seepage experienced during Winston Cup week In June 2000 several Indy Racing League drivers complained of a bump between turns 3 and 4 where the track had settled in the racing groove Earlier in the year a major patch was placed between turns 1 and 2 most of it outside the preferred racing line After a test in December by Kenny Brack a driver on the Championship Auto Racing Teams circuit TMS management had the areas between turns 1 and 2 and turns 3 and 4 scraped to make them smoother for the low-sitting open-wheel cars To alleviate the problem with the ground over the tunnels settling TMS is constructing the reinforced bridges as a long-term solution However Gossage expects repaving costs $300000 to $400000 to be a standard part of business at TMS which opened in 1997 The track surface tends to bleach out in areas because of heavy exposure to the summer sun and heat "We've come to realize that it's going to be normal maintenance to this racetrack to repave it every two three or four years" Gossage said Jim Stufflebeam director of development at Tms concocted the exact recipe for the granite-based asphalt compound though using granite in roads is nothing new Granite roadways were common in Texas in the 1960s and "70s Stufflebeam said Once local supplies of the rock ran out it became cheaper to use limestone than to truck granite in from Oklahoma But for a top-caliber speedway Stufflebeam said the extra quality is worth the extra cash "If you want to have a good surface" Stufflebeam said "you have to go that little extra step" The granite-based asphalt will lessen the chance of weather delays With the help of special jet-drying trucks a granite track should dry within 45 minutes Limestone on the other hand is porous and absorbs water so a rain shower means a potential two-hour delay Stufflebeam's mixture got its first test run last fall on TMS' new road courv which was finished just bef6re the StauTelegramSHARoN STEINMAN The resurfacing of the track at turn of events occurs after the sun sets behind the grandstand and shadows move across the turn The track undergoes an overhaul after the Cup race and is ready for the June 5 Craftsman Truck race Oct 16 1999 Eleven people are injured in a pit-road accident shortly before practice for the IRL's Labor Day weekend for the American Le Mans Series races The last-minute construction combined with a track teMperature of 170 degrees at race time led speedway workers to expect the worst "It was under the worst possible conditions" Gossage said "and we expected it to buckle up and develop potholes and things like that That didn't happen so we really realized 1Stufflebeaml had found a very durable coil-pound" Mallcom 500 ends Nine of the 11 are taken to area hospitals and two are treated at the Infield Care Center at the track The accident occurs when a car driven by Swedish rookie Niclas Jonsson spins into the pitted car of driver Tyce Carlson as Carl-songs crew was working on it June 89 is not blamed for the wreck which occurs in Turn 4 April 29 The inaugural Firestone Firehawk CART FedEx Championship Series race is postponed after the series' director of medical affairs reveals that gravitational loads caused by high speeds on the high-banked oval could cause a driver to pass out during the race The track considered safe by the series but the cars are deemed too fast Compiled by
