ProuLt and Sykes, Westerners Romp Through Drill In PerfectWeather Lubbock High's Westerner gridders took advantage of perfect weather conditions Tuesday afternoon at Chapman Field to romp through lenghty drills on passing and play assignments, in preparation for the rugged scrimmage session scheduled later this week by Head Coach Pat Pattison. In contrast to the first week of the 30-day spring training program, when high winds and blowing sand slowed the workouts to a walk, the Westerners drilled Tuesday under cloudy skies and cool temperatures that provided ideal football conditions. And the youngsters enjoyed every minutes of it as they smoothed out the rough spots in their offensive machine.

The "first shift" squad of approximately 30 relatively inexperienced candidates reported for the initial workout yesterday, and Pattison and Assistants Pat Farris and Freddie Brown put the boys through a brisk one-hour practice session. Then the larger "second shift" squad, which includes all the returning lettermen and more advanced youngsters, took the field for a fast- moving two-hour workout that covered most phases of play. There was no full-scale scrimmage, but there was considerable body contact as the linemen worked on their blocking assignments. Only casualty of the afternoon was End Nelson Starr, a sophomore up from 'team, who received a broken arm during a tackling drill. The youth was rushed to a downtown hospital immediately following the mishap, and physicians diagnosed the injury as a fracture.
