stalled Coppedge split the uprights from 38 yards and the Mays were back in the contest briefly They didn't stay in the game because they ran only six more offensive plays during the quarter Typical of the period was the patient 14play 56-yard drive which increasPd the Southerners' lead to 24-10 THE SOUTHERNERS were finally able to unleash Orange but again it was the pinpoint throws of Palazzo that fueled the drive Orange got the six points with his second two-yard scoring thrust Morriss replaced Holland following the kickoff but the battle-weary defense's rest on the sideline was brief Thomas Henderson gobbled up a fumbled handoff between Morriss and Joe Whitney and Southern Mississippi's final scoring drive of the third qu a er covered only 25 yards And again it was Orange who made the Mays' night a little bluer as his third touchdown of the night came on a one-yard burst Guy misfired on the PAT so the score stood 30-10 The Southerners ran the margin to 38-10 early in the fourth quarter Dennis Rogsallo took over for Palazzo and guided USN' to paydirt on his first effort The payoff came on Orange's fourth TD of the night Rossallo passed to John Sawyer for a two-point Star-Telegram Sports Writer HATTIESBURG Miss UT-Arlington discovered Southern hospitality was no match for charity even in the heart of Dixie Saturday night The Mavericks came out on opener at the hands of Southern Mississippi It was a setback made even more bitter for the Mays as they gave away three fumbles and four interceptions before 10240 fans who suffered in the heat of Faulkner Field The contest marked the debut of the three transfer quarterbacks Craig Holland Vic Morriss and Bobby Hill But it was as also the debut for USM's Buddy Palazzo at the man-under slot and he wasn't about to share the spotlight with anyone The junior hit 10 of 20 passes for 137 yards and one touchdown BUT STATISTICS don't tell the story of ball control as Palazzo was able to sustain timely drives against the weary Maverick defense And when the smell of pay-dirt was strong it was Doyle Orange who did the dirty work Orange had 65 yards in 25 carries but the flashy back had four touchdowns and that's the only statistic that really mattered for the Southerners Holland quarterbacked the Mavericks the first half and hit eight of 21 for 99 yards But he suffered all four interceptions Offensively the bright spot was the punting of Joe Whitney and Rhea Coppedge who was true on a 37-yard field goal But it was an all too familiar problem that haunted the Mavericks Lack of offensive consistency and the turnovers made it a long night for the defense wl'ich on tn's muggy night was like a death sentence It was some costly Southern hospitality that put the Mays in a 14-0 hole the Mississippi ground it out to make it 14-0 Two long runs by Plunkett and a two-yard scoring thrust by Doyle Orangt ended the drive The Southerners added three more on a 30-yard field goal by Guy before
