The Ghost of July 4ths Past: 'Lookif Wow! By MIKE ROYKO 172 Chicaqo Daily Newt Every 4th of July morning I hear the same strange sound It is Slats voice He is in front of the house yelling: can yon come He is out on the sidewa'k and he has a big brown paper bag in his arms Ha points at it with a bony finger We meet in the gang wav a few minutes later He opens the bag he hisses I gasp garages above the power lines beyond the rooftops almost disappearing in the clouds Then it falls slowly and clatters on the pavement Slats picks it up The unopen end is puffed out the inside scorched by the force of the explosion he hisses I hiss -h try it with a coffee he hisses We blow up the coffee can Then we shoot up two juice cans at the same time THERE ARE zebras by the package and cherry bombs torpedoes and skyrockets more zebras pinwheels nni other great stuff I hiss he hisses I hiss rh boy" he hisses And we trot quietly out of the gangway and into the alley He finds an empty soup can Then he takes a thick stubby cherry bomb out of ths bag and puts it on the ground as loud as I shout he shouts banging a torpedo against the candy store wall waste Slats yells lighting an entire package of zebras and tossing it on Mr porch I yell lighting an entire package of zebras and dropping them into Mr mailbox got to last all Slats yells laying out a row of torpedoes on the street ear tracks I yell aiming a rocket at the school windows WE TROT down the street as tht streetcar sets off a chain of explosions and mailbox sails into the yard and Mr porch trembles and a school window suffers a direct hit is more fun than IVe had in Slats yells I cackle Everybody in the neighborhood is outside shaking their lists We trot faster At the end cf the block on the corner all the guys are waiting brother Fats Big Head Louie Sneaky Tony Crazy Birdy And they all have big brown paper bags We trot faster But we get any closer All the guvs start fading away disappearing And Slats starts disappearing It happens every 4th of July morning And awakened by the same sound the alarm clock I listen for the can you come Nothing Ahhh nuts He puts the can over it so only the wick sticks out He lights a punk with a match waves it till the tip is red then he touches the punk to the cherry bomb wick And jumps back THE SOUND bounces off the garages and the houses It rattles windows and shakes porches Mortar trickles from between
