STAR-TELEGRAM Monday Evening July 10 1972 PLEASED TV's Impact on Politics Big--Cronkite Gross $5 Million 14-A FORT WORTH STAR DEMOCRATS PI Teletho Put at MIAMI BEACH (Reuter) The Democratic National Convention opens tonight with the party still deeply in debt despite almost $5 million collected in a national telethon yesterday "I'm elated" said Democratic Party Treasurer Robert Strauss who ordered the telephones kept open an extra two hours yesterday so that people could phone and register their donations to the party which came out of the 19G3 14-A FORT WORTH DEMOCRATS Telethon Put at tion for the President The nomination of Sen George McGovern seems likely But the Democrats could still produce something that would look like a Pier Six brawl as the candidates claw at that elusive brass ring that will at least entitle them to be introduced as "the next president of the United States" One of the worlds most exclusive clubs is that group of men who have heard themselves introduced as "the next president of the United States" only to watch their dreams vanish into thin air at the hands of the electorate Some men have had their run at the presidency only to fail and virtually disappear from public life Others like the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue have tasted bitter defeat and have come back for victory has been their reward Editor's note: During Cynthia Lowry's vacation this column is being written by invited guests each of whom asked to respond to specific questions about some area of his work in television Here is the report of CBS' veteran newscaster Walter Cronkite as he completed a refresher course in preparation for a gruelling job that comes up every four years By WALTER CRONKITE Has television turned national political conventions from an instrument for the nomination of presidential candidates into a combination dramatic show and ritual? A National party conventions are among the most-watched events on American television We've gone a long way since 1948 when perhaps as few as 10-million viewers seemed a lot in those the conventions which were held in no longer did some of them appear as though they had been mugged on the way to had caught up with politics But the appearance of the politicians wasn't the only thing that changed Everything did and some of the floor demonstrations resembled half-time at the Rose Bowl John Kennedy became a national figure in date the beginning of his 1960 candidacy to the Democratic convention in 1956 when through television millions of Americans witnessed his run for the vice presidency after presidential nominee Adlai Stevenson nad opened the nomination to the delegates His bid failed but the exposure pushed his career ahead at least 10 years The day he left Chicago John Kennedy was the front-runner for the next Democratic party nomination the dedicated Stevenson supporters They managed to pack the galleries in Los Angeles through sheer cunning and some rather shady dealings The Stevenson organization had been allowed a mere 24 tickets to the hall but had been able to obtain an additional 2000 tickets from various sources Then the Stevenson camp learned that the Kennedy organization had been alloted nearly 2500 tickets So Stevenson's supporters pinned on some "Kennedy for presiden buttons and walked away with another 1500 tickets The strength of the Kennedy organization saved the day If you watched television you know that the convention had every appearance of being Stevenson country But it wasn't and John Kennnedy was the nominee Who knows what the Democrats and the Republicans hold in store for us this time around?
