I B000rnmil By MIKE BOYKO fl'N 1972 Chicago Daily News Every 4th ot July mornin I hear the same stralge sound It is Slats Grobniks voice He is in front of tte house yelling: "Yoh-ha b0000-h0000 can yot come out?" He is out on the sidewa'k and he has a big brown pa per bag in his arms Ha points at it with a bony fia ger We meet in the gangway a few minutes later Ile opens the bag "Lookit" he hisses "Wow" I gasp garages above the power lines beyond the rooftops almost disappearing in the clouds Then it falls slowly and clatters on the pavement Slats picks it up The um-pen end is puffed out the Inside scorched by the force of the explosion "Lookit" he hisses "Boy" I hiss "Boy -n cy "Let's try it with a coffee can" he hisses We blow np the coffee can Then we shaot up two juice cans at the same time Somebody comes out on a back porch in his underwe top and shakes his fist WE TOSS a zebra fin-cracker into his yard then turn and trot quietly up th alley and into the street As we trot we toss torpedoes against the brick wa11 of buildings leaving a wave of milosions behind us "Torpedoes are just as load as cherry bombs" I shout "INI1 they're not" Slats shouts He puts the can over it so only the wick sticks out He lights a punk with a match waves it till the tip 13 red then he touches the punk to the cherry bomb wick And jumps back THE SOUND bounces off the garages and the houses It rattles windows and shakes porcnes Mortar trickles frm between bricks Cats Dogs howl The can leaps toward the sky climbing higher than the THERE ARE zebras by the package and cherry bomos torpedoes a skyrockets more zebras pinwheels in other great stuff "Wherejagettim" I hiss "Gvnatruck cameroun' num" he hisses "Boy" I hiss "Boy en boy" "Let's go" he hisses Ani we trot quietly out of the gangway and into the alley He finds an empty sou') can Then he takes a thick stubby cherry bomb out of 012 bag and puts it on the ground "Well they're as loud as ze bras" I shout "Yeah" he shouts banging a torpedo against the candy store wall "Don't waste 'em" Slats yells lighting an entire paci- age of zebras and tossing it on Witek's porch "I won't" I yell lighting ah entire package of zebras all dropping them into Lynch's mailbox "They got to last all day" Slats yells laying out a row of torpedoes en the street tracks "I know" I yell aiming a rocket at the school windows to to to WE TROT down the street as the streetcar sets off a chain of explosions and Lync't's mailbox sails into the yard and rkli Witek's porch trembles and a school window ruffers a dircct hit "This is more fun than l'e had in years" Slats yells "Me too" I cackle Everybody in the neiglibir hood is outside shaking their lists We trot faster At the end tr the block on the corner all the guys are waiting Slats br the Fats Big Heal Louie Sneaky Tony Crazy Birdy And they all have brown paper bags We trot faster But we don't get any closer All the guys start fading away disappearing And Slats starts disappearing It
